The crackling is the juice boiling and spitting on the coil when it heats up. There are a number of variables that can lead to it and a number of cures that may eliminate it. Essentially you have too much juice on the wire coil and/or the coil is not heating the way it should. Is there no markings on the coil to tell you what sort it is? I'd be surprised if it was either NI or TI without Smok bothering to tell you they are. Usually if they don't mention the wire then they are using Kanthal because a manufacturer sees NI, TI, & SS as a selling point and won't fail to mention it, but I have no experience with Smok.
Different juices react different ways. Different coils, coils of different ohms, differently designed coils all have different vaping characteristics. Cracking isn't necessarily a bad thing and some tanks do it more than others. A few days ago I switched my Crown 1 tanks over to RBA's and the impovement in taste and vapor was dramatic however they are now all crackingly but so what. Sometimes they crackle when the power is too low so keep trying to find that sweet spot. Don't be afraid to push it a bit. On a .4 ohm coil I'd normally expect to be vaping from 30 to 50 watts depending on the juice and the resulting vape but that dosen't mean to say I wouldn't vape at 25 or 60 as it all depends on the results.
Try different coils even of the same type, not all coils are built the same. Try different juices. Try different devices. It takes some time and experience to get a good vape and its always a pleasant surprise when something works better than before.
Of course then you put your tank down for a day or two and it all changes anyway because the vape fairies have been at it.
