Do you have a geiger counter set up?

I figured a scientific mind couldn't pass up the opportunity to see if there was even the slightest increase in environmental radiation counts with the cloud moving this way in a couple of hours...Even if it is probably a waste of time.

I will trade Potassium Iodide pills for Wowboy!!!

Wow. Thank heavens. When I first opened this thread and saw it was A) you and B) got the initial few keywords in my speed-skim, I was scared to death. I was going to close my browser window and move to Antarctica. Clearest way not to hurt your feelings. You don't know how much time I've spent debunking, defusing, and ....-kicking related to this topic. (JamVector will especially appreciate my role/position, I'd expect)

Instead of my knee-jerk response, and I trust you'll understand I'm touchy about it, I read your question and found it reasonable and pragmatic, even tongue-in-cheek. Whew. Let me see if I can cancel the U-Haul Snowcat...

My geophones clearly picked-up the large primary and the 7.1 aftershock. As far as radiation goes - my end-window detectors are pretty low-end. Their sensitivity is probably nowhere NEAR sensitive enough to distinguish any rise over background radiation. I'm considering putting up a sounding balloon in the next few days if the weather cooperates - but I don't see it. My gamma sensitivity (Co60) (cps/mr/hr) is 18. They're Ne +Halogen tubes for Alpha/Beta/Gamma detection, but they're fairly low-end. Maybe with enough clever filtering I might see something with some reasonable confidence. US Navy Sailors only a few miles away saw increased exposures only slightly above what I'd expect I'd experience flying from here to Japan on a commercial airline. We're talking one or two CT scans in the hospital.

My most recent work was debunking an NYT graphic for a friend of mine. Enclosed. ;) This is the kind of irresponsible reporting that leads to the mess we're seeing now. The sensationalism is disgusting bordering on irresponsibly yelling "fire" in a crowded theater. [pant pant slaver froth]

I am so glad I stocked up on Potassium Iodide Tablets 60mg, been popping like 1 an hour for the last day or so. My new Rad Suit ($1,200.00) is arriving tomorrow....I hope it gets here in time. I was just watching some fair and balanced news and they showed the giant cloud of radiation as in your linked graphic Addy which is due to hit the west coast tomorrow.

So...after looking at your graphic and closely reading your reply I guess it is true that rabid vampiric zombie weasels flying out of your .... is a symptom of the radiation sickness. Did you get that from flying through the radioactive cloud to Japan for your CT Scan? (popping another PI tab now) Good luck on your call from SI I hope you get the cover.

>> supposed to be a supersized moon

Kerplooie! My head just exploded.

>> Weasel words. It hz them.

They have "weasel words" I haz rabid vampiric zombie weasel words! BWAHAHAH! I win!

Absolutely. It's horrible. And kinda tickles.

Japan still has the bestest CT scanners.

>> i wonder whats gonna happen

The moon will be at its closest point to earth simultaneous to it's full phase. Tides will be a little higher. A very little bit higher. That's it. It happens relatively frequently, by astronomy-standards.

BTW, the moon was at almost its most distant from earth during the earthquake in Japan. So can't blame it. Sorry. :)

It's Global warming, errrr, excuse me, "Climate change" that is causing all of this! We have damaged the Earth so much with our fossil fuels and carbon she just can't take it any more and is coming apart at the seams now! If we don't change our ways soon we are all DOOMED! DOOMED I tell you!
I can't wait for it to dry out some more so I can go kill some trees for firewood!

Just got done running some sims with local data that I had for Half Moon Bay.

I expect Peregian Spring Tides of +60mm (about 2.3 inches higher than one would expect). Other locals will be different. I can't imagine what local influences it'd take to get to even 150mm (six inches), which would still be a big fat nothing. The moon is ~1hr from a perfect perigee. In 2008 it was ~4hrs from a perfect perigee. 1993 slipped by without notice, and it was a couple minutes closer. 2008 slipped by without notice, and it wasn't too far off. 2011 is in the middle. About once every 18-20 years.

The closer we get to 2012, the more time I spend whacking Internet Myths, and pointing out that the "ZOMG WE'RE GONNA DIE!!!" events actually occur unnoticed all the time. Nothing more than curiosities that get blown out of proportion through a combination of practical jokers and horrible reporting (and an utter lack of critical thinking)

Oh, you mean the fossil fuels and carbon that we get from our biosphere and emit back into our biosphere?

One of the statements that has made me want to stab people in the throat since infancy is "non-biodegradable". If it came out of our biosphere, it'll degrade back into our biosphere. Duh. Everything except Velcro. Which was imported by space aliens... ;)

In answer to your original question:

It looks like my 1yr average is 31cpm. I'm at 34cpm and trending down right now. Aboard SpaceBalloon, we read around 370cpm average at 27,000-45,000ft, about the flight level of a commercial airliner.

Rough back-of-the-napkin numbers, I'm looking at the equivalent of eating three bananas an hour, or sleeping next to another person for 16hrs. Probably similar to the radiation exposure I get from sleeping next to my dog.

While I was running those numbers, my ten minute sliding window is down to 30cpm.
