I've noticed, since I've began trying to quit analogs, that when I walk upto the cashier at a mini mart, I am confronted by a HUGE wall of really appetizing products, in really neat packaging...located just inches out of my reach.
Since advertising works by planting subliminal messages in our conscious mind as well as making something visibly appealing, every single person who enters a mini mart is getting a dose of commericial "radiation" so-to-speak by having these cigarettes in their pretty little packages in plain view of every customer that enters the store.
People go in with children, and children are incredibly impressionable. My idea: Remove the Wall-O-Smokes from view of the customer. Put the cigarettes under the counter or in another location so as not to be an "impulse item".
Pharmacies do just that with over-the-counter style medications, where you actually have to ask the pharmacist to retrieve it for you. I think that might help people trying to quit smoking, but also the impression that kids get by the visual stimulation of the advertising. Just a thought.
