I was looking up Harmine and found this . I use to grow passion flower and I forgot they were used make a tea to relax a person. :wub

Passion flower, Passiflora coccinea

Our whole organic Passion flower leaves and flowers blooms are hand picked in Bali, Indonesia. The Latin word Passiflora derives from the symbolic relationship between the anatomical & numerical arrangement of the flowers and the elements of the crucifixion which is the passion of Christ.

Chemically very little research has been done on this species although it is known to contain Harmine and other alkaloids such as Passiflorine which has sedating effects. Also important medicinally Passion flower makes an excellent tea to get rid of headaches and insomnia. Other uses include anti anxiety, nervousness, hyperactivity, menopausal problems, Parkinson’s dieses and drug withdrawal problems

The only one I have found of the passion plants that say it has harmine in it is Passiflora coccine. You can buy passion flower supplements from any vitimin store but they are passiflora incanate, which are easier to grow.. That dosn't mean they don't have some in it. So I ordered me two Passiflora coccine from LA which is almost next door. This fall if they do well I will let everyone know how it works out. They willl be little plants so it will take most of the summer for them to grow big enough to pick the leaves and flowers..

I guess that all passon flower plants have harmine in them. Harmala is also harmine, I did find two more plants but they appeared to be dangers causing halluliations. Syrian Rue and somthing else.

Medical uses

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Passion flower has a long history of use among Native Americans, in both North and Central America. It is used to treat insomnia, hysteria, and epilepsy, and is also valued for its painkilling properties. * It has been found to contain beta-carboline harmala alkaloids which are MAOi's with anti-depressant properties.

My understanding is that the harmine extends the effects of nicotine and make the desirable feelings last longer.

It might be a good thing to take along with nicotine but rather than thinking in terms of adding it to eliquid, what about taking it in tea or a drink or something.

Vaping and a cup of tea with harmine might become a winning combination.

I already have passion flower extract here. I use it as part of a night time mix to help me sleep sometimes, but it's not the Passiflora coccine.

The ingredients in this list only "organic Passion Flower (Passiflora spp.) flower and leaf. organic grape alcohol content: 30% Filtered water". so it should be OK to add to a vaping mixture, shouldn't it? I've been wondering about trying some of my extracts in my e-cigarette, especially something like ginger extract for queasiness during long car rides.

It's been awhile since I've done the research, but I recall Passion Flower as a safe one, as least as it applied to myself. I always recommend anyone considering trying any like that to do many searches to check it against other medications and conditions. Lobelia was mentioned as helping with quitting smoking, but it had too many worrisome warnings.

You would definitely need to be very careful with harmine being an MAOI. For those who don't already know what MAOI's do, they are used as antidepressants. However, the way in which they work is to slow down the metabolism/breakdown of chemicals in the body, more specifically seritonin dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. However, in the same is true for other chemicals, such as nicotine. I've taken MAOI's (specifically harmala seeds) experimentally with other substances and have done a ton of research on the topic in the past. And I know from very bad experiences that it doesn't take much to get you in trouble with your health. All I know is that it's something to be very careful with when experimenting, as you increase the risk of nicotine overdose using this method since the body doesn't break down the substance as quickly.

As far as the concept goes, if anybody gets a chance to try it, I'd like to know how it worked out for you :).

From memory MAOI's are contra indicated with a large number of medications and foods. What sort of side effects did you get?

MAOI's are in regular cigarettes in the form of harmine/harmlas. If you had a problem with smoking cigs because of harimne then you will have a problem taking passion flower extract.

I bet less than 1/4 of smokers know what they are really smoking. I don't beleive the people that make analogs know what all the chemical are that are in analogs and occur from the reaction to burning/high tmepatures.

Let me put it this way, too much choice substance, too much MAOI, near death experience... Experience wise, this is several years ago, but I thought my body was shutting down from the stress due to the amplified effect of the substance (again, I was young and didn't know exactly what I was doing). Consulting a doctor -- well never did, I lived :) I never really took MAOI's to relieve depression and never got any long term exposure effects. I did it all for the moment, and the moment nearly won... (Sorry to not be more specific, I'd rather not specify...) I was merely thinking that it could maybe be more of a "Hey, let's try this" experiment from the way I interpereted the posts. Figured I'd throw my experience with extending the "high" using MAOI's. When done properly, it can be great, but I honestly don't know if it would be a good idea or not. I'll have to consult my girlfriend to get better information, since she happens to be both a biochemist and a nurse practitioner she could probably tell me a lot more about it than I can say. Considering the long term side effects of MAOI's on neurotransmitters in the brain and the contra indications of certain foods due to chemical content and the inablility of the body to break them down when MAOI's are present, I would just be careful. I also certainly wouldn't want to train my brain to produce less chemicals because the ones there are staying too long... Just a thought... As we all know, it takes a long to recover from chemical imbalance, probably the reason we all still crave nicotine!! But that's just my 2cents :)

Hello, I came upon this discussion in a search engine for passion flower and wanted to add some information.

I have worked with passion flower "Passiflora Incarnata" for several years now and this plant has many applications.

Passiflora Incarnata has the highest flavanoids, alkaloids, and the 8-pyrone derivative content out of the 400 different species, It is the most commercially used due to many others containing toxic agents.

Flowers,Leaves, and stems are used. "Leaves containing highest alkaloid content".

Passiflora Incarnata Extraction Procedure:
1. Powderize plant material "flowers/leaves".
2. Add 300 Ml Warm Distilled water to plant material and allow to sit 3-5 minutes.
Note: use tall thin container if possible.
3. Filter through coffe filter's' and keep aqueous solution. "discard plant material".
3. Add 2-5 drops Standard Vinegar Solution to aqueous solution and mix well.
Note: Solution will be some variation of brown at this point.
4. Add 1 - 4 Drops Household Ammonia to solution.
Note: Upon adding you will notice reaction. "Ammonia reacting with harmine's' to form salts". The top of solution will appear to turn white.
5. Let solution sit several hours until you notice white precipitation building up on the bottom of container. A frigerator will speed up this process.
6. Once all alkaloids have precipitated siphon off water layer carefully not to remove any alks. Once water has been removed add more warm distilled water to start the washing. "removes colored impurites".
7. Repeat step 6 until alks appear to be very white/ to almost clear in color. this may take 3-10 times.
8. pour clean water solution onto glass evaporating dish and fan dry to yield crystalline harmine/harmala alks.

Purification: To further purify add dried alks to distilled water solution, put in heat safe container and bring to a low boil on stove. Once water begins to boil add 1/2 gram activated carbon and mix well. Filter through coffe filter and evap solution to yield 97-98% pure Harmine.

Note: Harmine will resemble small colorless needles when viewed under magnification.

Total alkaloid Extraction of P. Incarnata.
All active alks are water soluble.
1. Powderize plant material and add to 300 ML distilled water.
2. Filter through coffe filter and evap.
Note: This method will yield brown to black extract that will most likely harden or become tarry after removal from glass dish.
- This extract will easily dissolve when added to water/alcohol.

Extract Storage:
Store in airtight bags, away from direct light.

While the above procedure yields only harmine, the whole plant material will offer slightly different effects which may be more helpfull in treating certain conditions.

Hope this helps, any questions feel free to ask.
-drella.
