Right! Slow news day and the guy got a scratch from a bullet. Sensationalism. I've accidentally vacuumed up a couple of .22 rimfire cartridges and it made quite a bang but just rattled around in the vac before it sucked up into the bag. The 9mm round the guy hit needs to be in a gun's chamber that controls the expansion of the softer brass to gain any ft lbs of energy/velocity. If it was in a gun and fired it would have passed thru the man's belly and continued on.
BTW, I'd say in my experience 75% of news stories have errors whether unintentional or not.

For what it's worth, I once set of a .45 ACP cartridge (not bullet!) with a bb gun. Got the primer on the second try. A twisted piece of brass entered my arm with enough force to require minor surgery. In cold weather, the scar is still quite distinctive. With the exception of black powder under pressure, gunpowder is not an explosive. It is a propellant, though if someone set off a 30-06 next to your ear, you might consider that to be a distinction without a difference.
The definition of the word explosion is the rapid expansion of a gas. I learned/memorized that about a hundred years ago in chemistry.
Looking at the picture, I'm assuming the spring was part of the altered switch. On a Mutant, the only spring is on the adjustable positive pin adjustment. I have a Mutant clone, and judging by the looks of my spring, the one in the picture appears to be larger. I'm also not seeing the magnet from the copper disk on the bottom right, which is sticks to the bottom of the battery. So, from what I see, I'm assuming the guy installed the spring to compensate for the missing magnet. I am also assuming the spring became unseated, made contact, and shorted the battery within the tube.
BTW...The Mutant clone that I have, made by Tobecco, has twin vent holes in the logo etched on the side, near the bottom. The authentic Mutant does not have these holes.
Bear in mind that I'm not a crime scene investigator...just a tool and die maker that used to review and inspect dies that crashed in the presses, and was tasked with writing reports on them, which included finding out what happened. So often, I was just handed a pile of broken die blocks and punches, and had to reconstruct what happened to find out why it happened.
How can any mod with holes be safe if a swollen battery can cover the holes. I think the venting holes is ineffective on most of the constructions but we don't know it yet. Someone should test a real life short on a common mod.
Without adequate and competent testing I don't think we know for a fact what constitutes safe mod venting for a runaway battery, even an IMR.
Shinyitis and rushing to get on the latest bandwagon always seems to trump safety concerns. Predictably, but sadly, the vast majority of the vaping community responds to legitimate, serious safety concerns with indifference, denial and/or scapegoating.
