im worried if i do it by hand it wont be even...

If clearing metal is anything like wood, its easy just time consuming. Steps, clear, high grit sand, tac cloth clear, repeat untill it looks like glass. Just do really light clear coats, if you think its a bit to light, you just about right. This is to get a even and run free glass finish.
