can I charge a non-pila 18650 battery in it ? The manual says no but that seems silly.

Yes. I use it for all of my batteries. AW, Ultrafires... Even 18350 size with a spacer.

I did use it , since I was desperate to get my SD batt's charged since last charger sorta exploded<?>
It did work but I feel better knowing that future charges shouldn't be a problem or damage the Pila in anyway.
