I joined ECF to do research and figure out how to convert my old Savinelli Rustic Estate pipe into a ePipe. (http://i588.photobucket.com/albums/ss330/elektrobargain/pipe p/14_zps97ddddc9.jpg)

I love the look of this pipe but I don't plan on smoking tobacco any more - it's been just sitting in a canister with some pipe gear and I thought I'd drill it out, drop an 18350 battery in it and then pop this carto on it: T1 SCT Single Coil Cartomizer Tank. Too bad about the brass on the carto but I love the shape and I think it will keep theme with the original pipe. Maybe I can torch the brass or something...

My current problem is how to mount a button. I originally wanted a spring button on the bowl but I've watched SW FL Mike's videos (All Vapor No Smoke) and didn't really want to create a cap on top of the bowl like he does. I also don't want to use a button up on the shank by the carto like I've seen on some. I need to find out if the battery can charge through the 510 like my little vision spinner does and, if so, I can solder the battery in, put some kind of cover into the bowl to hide the battery and then put a button on the cover or onto the side of the bowl or something... If I have to remove the battery to charge it, that complicates things.

Anway, noob post 1 of 5 down...

A button on the side of the bowl facing your nose will allow you to activate it with either hand.

Have you considered an automatic switch (it senses when you take a drag).

Be careful how you charge the battery. A proper charging circuit is necessary to avoid explosions and stuff like that. (I'm just saying this because I don't know how familiar you are with working with electronics.)

Those are great suggestions. Do you have a link for an automatic switch? I'd love to look at it. I'll google around as well.

Have you ever had an automatic switch on a device? I sometimes like to heat up my coil before I start to take a drag... I wonder what the experience would be like if you relied on the drag to close the circuit.

I realized after posting that trying to do charging through the 510 in what is basically a mech mod would be pretty tough before you even got into circuitry due to the open circuit. The more I think about it, the more I think I should just build it with a way to pop the battery out to charge it. I'll save recharging in the mod for a project down the road...

(Hi always9988 - thanks for the greets)

I started out with some cheap automatic batteries (ego K clones). I learned that I prefer the switch because of the preheating you mention, but starting with a slow drag to activate the battery, and then ramping it up once the coil is hot, works OK too.

Got my first part in - unfortunately it's just the battery charger but the guys at RTDVapor were quick! Ordered on 11th and got my package on the 15th. I ordered my connector and battery through Madvapes - site currently says that USPS has been notified of the order on the 14th... Did it really take 3 days to get the package ready to ship? I don't know if I should be impressed with RTD or bummed about Madvapes. Ordered Carto through Fasttech - the order status on Fasttech is really cool - they posted a picture of my package ready for shipping. I don't have a tracking number but they say it was shipped on the 13th. I expect it to take a couple to a few weeks to get here.

I'm going to have to try an autoswitch sometime but I think I'll go with a manual switch on this one for ease of use and getting the thing done quick. I decided I'd put a switch on the back of the shank which would allow me to drill out the air hole to the bowl as well and let me fit the wiring more easily. I can run a single 18ga insulated wire through the existing air hole pretty easily but I need a couple wires and I'm not sure what gage my pre-wired connector is going to come with.

The shank is cradled in the crux of my thumb and index finger so I hope to trigger the switch by pressing the bowl into my thumb a bit. We'll see!

5th post! Not a total newb anymore.

I know its a bit more work but having the ability to change batteries might be more convenient rather than having to solder in and out batteries as and when they die as invariably they will do.

I've been eyeing the internals of a Hammer clone with much the same thought, I want a home made Dwarven pipe made out of a nice big chunk of blackthorn I salvaged last year and is a really nice section of wood, I was going to take the screw ring from the Hammer and set it into the wood holding in the brass tube for the battery and then screw the Hammers button assy into that, the only thing I would have to fashion is a bit of wire to carry the circuit connection to the atty plate, the best thing is the Hammer is really a big chunk o' metal around a quite simple design so have been using Gmax to build some models to get the idea of how much to ream out, make the circuit etc.

I got my parts in last night - I have everything fitted together and did a quick test. Need to solve my switch conundrum but here's v1...

I need to replace the test cap with a black version, flush mount the connector and decide what switch I'll use... I really wish I had bought that auto switch with the rest of my order :).
