Am I the only person left on the planet that uses the old school eGo kit with cartridges? After searching and reading more threads than I want to count, it kind of seems that way. The question is, why?
I was introduced to vaping when my wife's friend sent us a Joyetech eGo, probably a couple of years ago. We tried it, but went back to burning leaves mainly due to lack of motivation. After a health scare, I decided to try again, and now much prefer vaping to smoking. So I went to get backup gear and discovered that Joye does not carry the old eGo anymore, but I can get them from other vendors.
In my perusal of this forum, it seems that no one uses those anymore, so I wonder what I am missing. I even found this on the vaping.com glossary: "Cartridge: Deprecated - no longer available. First generation cigalikes were 3 piece devices comprised of a battery, an atomizer and a cartridge containing an e-liquid saturated filler which was inserted into the atomizer."
I have found a few issues with that system, but none of them seem serious enough to feel the need to change. The cartridges do not hold a lot of juice, so I need to top them off every hour or two, but then a lot of folks here are hooked on dripping, and the carts do allow more time between refills than that. The attys get gunked up after a while, but it sounds like that happens to most setups, and I have found an acceptable method on this forum for cleaning them to like-new condition. The stock Joye eGo batteries do not have as robust protection circuitry as their newer models, but I believe you could use a newer battery with the old eGo atty and cartridges. Is that correct?
The only potentially serious issue I can see is that if you run the cart to dry, you end up getting a singed taste and probably inhale fumes from the filler material that might be toxic. But then cartos are the same way, and it seems a whole lot of people still use those.
I will likely venture forth into more advanced mod and DIY realms eventually for the heck of it, but for now I just need something reliable and easy to use, and these old eGos seem to fill the bill nicely. They are also less expensive than the newer models, which matters quite a bit for me at this time.
But am I missing something? Is there any serious reason I should not continue to use these, other than seeking a more refined (and more complex) vaping experience? I understand I can save some money with RBAs, but these Joye attys are still going strong after 3 months of heavy vaping (4 fully charged Joye 650 mAh batteries a day), so saving $2 a month does not seem that crucial.
