Well, the brass firing pin I had in ol' tank for the last year or so finally developed a little crack, and it was time for some cleaning and a 510 rebuild anyway. BUUUUUT, I didn't have any good brass or BeCu to hand (not the right gauge and temper). So, I was scratching my head and remembered I had some scrap tidbits of Sterling Silver from another project. It's like 6 gauge round rod so . . . . not the right shape really. Until you beat it with a hammer for a bit. :p As for temper, I guess maybe "hammer hardened" will do?

then I went after it with the old shears and a file . . .

Pliers . . . . smaller hammer . . . more pliers . . .

AAAAANNNNNNND . .. . she's in!

Well now, that seemed a little lopsided (a little top heavy if you will). So I started thinking about getting some silver in the bottom end too. (no . . . not that bottom end . .. . . . . . . .. sheesh). Anyway, I had some silver coated BeCu laying around in odd bits and pieces (offcuts); so I rigged this up.

And there's good ol' tank, all put together and vapin' like a dream (again . ..). If I were to stop and think how many things I've done to this sweet mod . . . . . . anyway, that's why I call him tank. He's been to hell and back, and I love every scratch on him.

:D

Cool! I envy your ingenuity.

I'm not sure if this application really requires hardening... but if you really want to harden that silver:

I spent a couple of years hanging around with a knife maker when I was young. I learned that Sterling can be hardened to something like 54 rockwell with some finesse with an oxy-acetalyne torch and a jar of mineral oil. You have to get it glowing at around 1300 degrees F for about a half hour or forty five minutes - and then dunk it in hot oil... I have no recollection of what temperature the oil was supposed to be but I bet that's something google might know... then heat the Sterling back up to 575 degrees F for a half hour. Toss it in the jar of oil and let them both cool off until morning.
