If you're just beginning your vape odyssey, I'd suggest staying with a regulated mod, like the Provari mini you mention, or maybe some other telescopic tube mod. Unless you're already up to speed on safe battery practices, since mechs don't have any protection or monitoring.

Trade off to "shorter" will, of course, be less run time between charges The 18350 size will come in around 800 mAh, so just over half the time you're getting on your 1300 Spinner. So you might need a battery box with spares also in your pocket.

That said, box mods - unregulated or regulated - are generally good performers. Whether or not they are comfortable in your hand, only you can tell.

Something else to consider, since you mentioned the ProVari Mini, would be the Sigelei ZMax Mini. It is a 4 Amp Device, it has a one-button menu system very similar to the ProVari, it has an OLED Screen, and has both VV and VW. It is a great performer at about 1/5 the price. You can use 18650s in it, and I'd recommend IMRs. There are Panasonic Flat Top IMR Batteries of 2250 mAh and more. I am using the Panasonic CGR18650CH Flat Tops in my ZMax.

There is at least one 18650 VV Gripper out there. This video is from Aug 10, 2012 . . .

NOTE:
Some Panasonic Hybrid batteries may be too long for this device. Some fit and some don't, depending on the springs in the Gripper. Long batteries such as the AW Li-Ion (black) 18650 or some TrustFire Protected Li-Ion batteries will NOT fit in this device. The Max length must not exceed 68mm! AW IMR (Orange) 18650's work just fine. Do NOT force the lid closed if a battery does not fit.

That said, the Panasonic CGR18650CH Flat Tops are exactly 65mm long. FYI: An 18650 Battery, by the Specs, is supposed to be 18.0mm in diameter, and 65.0mm long. This varies between brands. Adding the Protection circuit to an Unprotected Li-Ion makes it longer than 65mm, and can increase the diameter some. A Button Top makes it longer than 65mm. Having both makes it even longer.

This SmokTech VV Gripper is still available in the link below, and probably several other places (link only shown for availability and features - not an endorsement of the Vendor - shop around).

SmokTech Gripper VV mod

It is also a 4 Amp Device, so you won't run in to the limitations of the Mods that are 2.5 Amp Devices (like your 1300 mAh Spinner). Some people have had problems with the 510 in the plastic casing, like from over-tightening a tank or from dropping it, so if you get one, be careful with that.

There are also Dual-14500 VV Box Mods, like this . . .

Variable Voltage Box Mod

These are quite small and easily pocketable in a shirt pocket. It has an On/Off Switch, a VV Dial that is accessible without opening it, and a small Vape button. I have one of these that is not VV (it's fixed at 5V Out - called a 5V Box Mod), and I've never had any problems with the 510.

I hope this helps. :)

Not sure what pocket or what price point.

If it's a pants pocket you may want to look at this: ZIP EZ (NEW)

If it's a shirt pocket, there is a lotta love on ECF for the iTaste MVP2 that gives typical 2 days run time between charges and still gives you a VV option you have with the Twist. If you are talking Provari level prices and want to investigate mechanicals, a Reo Mini is about 2/3's the size of a pack of cigarettes and is very pocket friendly. Both boxy options.
