Hey all...hope your day’s gone well.

I went to my local public forum for the candidates for the Wetaskiwin riding so that I could better inform myself for the forthcoming Election Day. There were supposed to be four of them, but only two bothered to show up: The PC’s Blaine Calkins and the NDP’s Tim Robson. Liberal candidate Chris Anderson and Green Party candidate Robert Johnston failed to show up for the third forum in a row, with no reason given for their absences.

There were some papers there for people to write down their questions on if they were too chicken to take the mike, and I submitted two of them (since I’m as big a chicken as they come).

Question One: In light of the dangerous precedent of businesses being raided without a warrant, would the candidate do something to rescind or revise Bill C36 before it becomes active in June?

Question Two: Would you pursue the full legalization of electronic cigarettes in Canada?

In answer to Q1, Mr. Calkins stated that the lack of warrants is “reasonable action to take” in order to protect consumers from health products that are possibly not of “safe quality,” but that he wholeheartedly supports Natural Health Products.
GRRRRR......

Mr. Robson had no idea what my question referred to and rambled on about how insurance should cover natural remedies.

For Question Two, my query about ecigs must have been from QUITE out of left field, since half of the several-hundred-strong audience twittered and giggled. I was glad I wasn’t at the mike for that one and I kind of shrunk into my seat a little bit.

However, Mr. Calkins took the podium and stated that he wasn’t at ALL familiar with them, so he couldn’t really speak to that at the moment. He’d be happy to talk about it in person though.

Mr. Robson said he wasn’t familiar with them either, but nonetheless emphatically denounced them, saying that to use them as a stop smoking aid was like giving liquor to an alcoholic (to which he got several claps and cheers...gag me).

So, there I sat thru the remainder of the questions, figuring, “Well THAT did a whole lot of good...NOT.”

The audience was dismissed by the chairperson at the end, but then right away, she said, “Oh, wait a minute everybody! Blaine’s just looked up electronic cigarettes on his phone! I’ve never even seen one of those things.”

So the whole place was standing there, listening to Blaine reading off the first few bits of the Wikipedia entry on ecigs...and while he did so, I walked up to the stage (didn’t go on it though) and VAPED in front of God and everybody!!!

Holy crap, my heart was beating a mile a minute because people were staring and pointing at me and saying, “Oh, look at that!” Blaine then said, "Well, there you go, folks! You can't go home tonight and say you didn't learn something."

The moment passed pretty quickly though. I thanked Blaine for bringing up ecigs and said I’d love to chat with him sometime about it since I KNOW it's improved and saved lives...we shook hands, and I fairly much bolted from the building!!!!

That probably sounds kind of far out, but I’m honestly telling the whole truth here. My heart’s still racing, a couple of hours later. Some public speaker I’d make. Ponoka’s a small place, so a person can kind of do that sort of stuff at our venues. Maybe the local paper will say something about it next week and I can put the clip up here in case someone thinks I’m lying. I’m sure I looked like a bit of a freak, but I really didn’t go ranting on or anything. Just vaped.

Here are a couple of very bad pictures. Tim Robson wore a green and white checkered shirt with Pepe laPew and Bugs Bunny on it:

Blaine Calkins (incumbent) was in simple “dress casual, Alberta style” jeans with suit jacket:

Sigh. The candidates in my riding are sure making it hard for me to decide my vote. Vote for an incumbent who has a proven track record of community involvement in my area (though I hate his party for C36), or cast my vote to one of three “weeners”?

I think this is a perfect example of how the public really don't know much about e-cigarettes and how mis-perceptions are occurring because of their lack of knowledge. It's great that you got it out there and even showed them. Maybe a few went home tonight and thought about it. Maybe some of them know someone who would like to try it. Or even use one themselves. Maybe the two candidates will think a little more about it too.

What you did was gutsy and very good.

Thanks, guys. I'm still blushing, thinking about it, but of course I do feel very strongly about vaping. Maybe in the future if I'm in a similar circumstance I'll be ready to stick around and see if anyone has some questions! I really chickened out there I guess.

I was just NOT expecting that kind of a finish to the evening! I felt like I was holding up a torch of fire to the enlightened masses to marvel at for a minute there. I can scarcely believe that more people hadn't heard of these things since Ponoka's pretty plugged in to the internet. Still shaking my head a bit, but yeah...now a few more people know about ecigs here.

:)

I've gotta say, what kind of a nutjob wears a Loony Toons shirt to a debate? Sounds like he escaped from the Ponoka loony bin!

That's what I was thinking! Then I felt bad cuz maybe someone special made it for him and it has great sentimental value or something. Still...left a strange first impression, though. He ages well...he's almost 61.

You go girl!!! Good for you! I know it was a scary moment but it took guts and you did it. Not only are the candidates and the chairperson now looking them up, but every person in the audience that is a smoker (or knows a smoker) is, without a doubt, looking them up and learning more about them! I think if every one of us can increase awareness about pv's (just letting people know that they exist!), we'll have more supporters!

AlbertaClipper, you are a very brave girl!

And we're very proud of you for what you did. Thank you for sharing!! This actually helps me feel better too; we're meeting the lawyers tomorrow & I'm quite nervous about it. Really feeling the pressure - every vaper in Canada is counting on our making a good impression! But if you can have the guts to do what you did in public...then I should have the guts to meet someone in private. What you did took a lot of courage.

Anyway, thank you for this inspiring & interesting post - & for getting the NDP to publicly answer a question about e-cigs! Yes, their answer was reprehensible...but getting a public answer at all is more than we've been able to do in 6 months. Again, you are awesome.

Rachel,

I don't think you need to feel pressure at this point. All the hard work is done for finding a legal firm and familiarizing them with the needs of the vaping community. There has been mention of terms already which, along with all the detailed flow of information, pretty much shows that they will file.
Lawyers have no illusions of what people are like so making an impression may be important or not. Just go in, fall down, and the petition will get filed which HC has no choice but to respond to and show up in court or not show up and loose by default (more or less depending on judge).

one more kudos to AlbertaClipper - very brave and inspirational.

Thanks for this glad to hear it.

Proves that the government isn't quite so malicious and draconian as some people seem to think. Just ignorant (and dysfunctional of course), signing blanket legislations without really reading all the 400 riders (cmon when was the last time any of you read and comprehended a ToS in full before signing/clicking).

As usual though it does more good to light a candle than to curse the darkness, thanks for that AC great to hear feel good stories these days.
