Today is my 11th day without having a cigarette. I used to smoke about a half a pack or more a day. At first I started with 6mg of nicotine juice but found myself reaching for the ecig every 15 minutes. So I bought some 18mg juice and used that for a few days and did pretty well. I would try to wait at least an hour before picking it up again (many years ago I was told to only use the ecig for as long as it would take me to smoke a regular cigarette). A few days after I started using the 18mg, I noticed that I would feel jittery in an uncomfortable sort of way and slightly lightheaded before my 5 minutes was even up so I'd put it down. Now I'm mixing the 6mg liquid with the 18mg (I was told I could do this at the store I purchased the liquid from) to try and get a balance between less cravings to smoke and feeling less jittery.

1- Now that I think I may have found the right balance I've noticed that my tongue is hurting on the top as if it had been burned. My tongue has been burned in the past from getting my tonsils removed in 2012 but it healed up months later with still a bit of a crack down the center where it likely will never fully heal. I'm wondering if it's even possible for the vapor to cause any damage to the tongue.

2- Also, I have Crohn's disease (Inflammatory Bowel Disease/IBD and yes I am aware that nicotine is not good for Crohn's, hence why I'm gradually quitting, I'll continue to taper to 0 nicotine at my own pace) and am currently in a flare (not in remission) so now I have a couple ulcers in my mouth (many refer to them as canker sores) however one is on the side of my tongue, the other is in the back of my throat and I've never had one in either spot before. While this still very well may be Crohn's related, I was wondering if using the ecig could be the main cause or at least contributing (I read that smoking cigarettes can cause them but I never got any while smoking cigarettes for years, even during my recent flare). I don't suck hard on the ecig because I don't really have to.

3- Since I quit smoking cigarettes and every time I quit before, I would cough a lot yet recently my coughing has been different so I'm wondering if vaping in general could cause people to cough if it's done too often (I'm aware many cough during their first few tries and that it takes some getting used to, this is different). Or maybe I'm just coughing from quitting smoking but I do wonder.

4- Now I'm finally curious, how often is too often? If there were no nicotine I imagine that I would probably vape all day without a second thought as I find it enjoyable. However I am using nicotine (some dose between 18-6mg) should I still be limiting my vape time by 5 minutes and then wait an hour or is it ok to puff on it throughout the day and then stop if I start feeling funny?

Those are the 4 points I would love some clarification on. I saw that other thread about dogs and cats in the same room and was a bit worried there a bit but it seemed that wasn't too much of an issue. Main thing is to keep the juice out of their reach in case of accidental ingestion. So far my cats just look at me funny and want to smell my ecig but I don't let them just to be on the safe side.

Edit: I don't know if this matters or not but I thought I'd mention that when I use it, I can hear a slight crackling, like small amounts of liquid through a small straw. Then sometimes I get extreme flavor, from liquid that came into my mouth. Not a lot but I think that perhaps somehow liquid is getting through the mouth piece.

I answer these questions but I'm not a doctor nor am I giving medical advise: To answer questions 1,2 & 3: Your body will go through some changes after quitting analogs, you should have similar symptoms as quitting before. Eliquid drys the mouth and can cause mouth sores remember drink more liquids. If mouth sores and tongue pain continue you may be having a reaction to PG in the eliquid you could try a 100% VG eliquid. 4. You will have to be the judge on how much. If you feel funny you may need an lower nicotine level. Most 1/2 pack a day guys fit in between 6-12 mg. As far as the animals its got to be better than second hand analog smoke.

Thank you for your reply. :) I know you guys aren't doctors and if I needed one then I'd definitely go see my own. :)

As for the PG and VG, since I'm new, that's new to me. I don't seem to have the classic symptoms that I read about just now but it's very possible that PG may be an issue. I don't make my own liquid and please forgive the next newbie question. Where do I find VG liquid (ready made with flavor, ready to use)? I have a store I go to here in town so I'll ask what's inside their liquid (if PG is cheaper then it's likely that) and ask if they have any or know where I can get some that has VG instead.

I figured vaping would be rather straight forward but there's a hell of a lot more to it that I didn't plan for. I'm not giving up but I'm clearly learning as I go unfortunately. I'm a kinesthetic learner so I'm doing the best I can. :) Thank you for your help.

If I went down to 6mg a day or even 0mg (the ultimate goal), is it ok to use it as often as you want?

LOL, you'd be surprised what people ask and some answer like they have been practicing for years. Some of the better suppliers list their PG/VG percentage some will mix your eliquid to your percentage you want some even have 100% VG (Mt Baker Vapor is one that cames to mind). I saw were Rip Trippers (vape trik) is coming out with an organic line of eliquid. If you have a dry cough when you are vaping try some cough drops or something to keep the back of you throat moist until you get adjusted. Many new vaper have the same symptoms you have so don't be overly concerned most adjust and have no problems after a few weeks.

I until an recent equipment change I pretty much vaped 36mg all day for five years. When I quit analogs, I struggled to get to the mailbox, now I jog 3 miles several times a week. I have cut my mg in half cause of an more efficient delivery system not that I cut back on vaping.

Thank you for your help. :)

I went back to the store today and they said that their liquids contain both PG and VG but the guy working didn't know how much and didn't seem to know much about how the PG can cause symptoms in some people.

I bought a new e-cig today so I can have one to use all day with very little nicotine in it and switch back and forth to the one with the higher amount of nicotine. I got another 6mg juice in a different flavor and a 0mg juice in another flavor (they mix pretty well flavor wise). The well that holds the liquid says KangerTech T3S and the battery I got is adjustable so I can make the inhalation feel stronger rather than feeling like I'm just breathing in flavored air. The battery says e-Go-C twist on it. I'm not sure if these are any good but they are better than the first one I bought (CE4 Clearomizer 650mAh).

So far things are going well and my tongue does feel a bit better today so it may not have been related to the e-cig yet I won't rule it out entirely. Hard to say what's causing what when you have so many health problems already.

After vaping for about 5 years, I have found that I'm just sensitive to certain flavorings. I have experienced the burnt tongue, dry cough (very different from the smoker's cough that went away 2 weeks after quitting), and also swelling/irritation around the edge of my lips. I have learned to avoid liquids with cinnamon flavoring at all costs, and am generally cautious with citrus and other acidic flavors, even though they are some of my favorites. Modifying the quantity does not help. I can chain vape one juice all day long with no ill effects, while another will cause a severe reaction after mildly vaping for a few hours.

My advice would be to experiment with different e-liquids and try new vendors to see if that helps. Rinsing your mouth with hydrogen peroxide may also help alleviate the symptoms.

Try virginvapors.com for 100vg, they rock. For a long time they were the only thing i could vape. And try a higher atomizer if theres one avaliable for the t3s, the guys at your shop where u got the liquid should know. Ex 2.5 instead of 1.8 the liquid wont get as hot and it will be kinder to your mouth.

Vitamin B Complex is also excellent for mouth soreness of all types.

I've heard that PG can irritate the throat, maybe the mouth too? I have no problems with it, accustomed as I am for 30yrs to my asthma inhaler, but some people seem sensitive to PG. I also recall that when I first started using the inhaler, my tongue would get sore far in the back, right in the middle. That was also true of the old-style inhalers before they got rid of the CFCs in them, and you had to hold the inhaler a certain distance from your mouth -- too close, too often, and you got the vapor on your tongue instead of in your lungs, and it made the tongue sore -- might be the PG, or just the old molecular structure. It no longer applies since they came out with the HFA inhalers to replace the CFC-containing ones.

And yeah, many times mouth sores are a good indication of bad things happening in the "guts," so your thought that it could be Crohn's related could be right on the money. It's all the alimentary canal, after all, and if things are haywire below, sometimes there are also symptoms "up above."
