Pre-soaking filler? Any reason why not?

Howdy all-

Currently I have an SS Choice No. 7 Micro (I am so sick of typing that...but 510 didn't get here today. *pout*) It takes DSE103 carts. I hate the design of those carts. They don't hold much liquid, meaning constant top-offs. The design is just fiddly & inefficient. And they are a p.i.t.a. to fill/refill properly.

The prefilled carts don't seem to have as much problem as those I have filled/refilled myself. Not user error- I've tried all different methods. (Other than syringe, which might work okay, but I don't have one atm). It's really just the way the carts are designed. I could explain why with photos & such, but I'll save that for my review, so I don't go on & on here).;)

Anyway, it occurred to me that prefilled carts probably aren't filled individually. I'm sure they just soak a big load of filler or filler "pellets" in juice & then stick it in the carts. That seems more efficient, but I've never seen mention of doing refills that way. Every video or discussion of refilling that I've seen is drip-and-poke-and-drip some more. I'm not sure how it would apply to different models. (I'll have to look at the carts when I get my 510). But for the DSE103 it would be much easier. And if it would also be practical for other models, it seems a heck of a a lot more efficient if you want to prepare carts to have on-hand.

So, is there any reason not to try that? And if anyone has done that, any tips I should be aware of?

Thanks - RR

Only negative I can see is it would be a big mess trying to stuff wet filler into that itty bitty cart 8-o
Haha, yeah... still pondering that part of the idea. I think a small funnel or something would make it doable. Or a syringe without a needle or... hrm can thing of a few options. I'll play around with it.

Just hadn't seen anyone mention such a thing & wondered if there's a secret reason why not. LoL

I agree ... I think it would work, but probably take more time to clean the mess than it would have taken to fill individuals.
Don't suppose you've actually refilled any 103's lately? :p The design is kinda mess-conducive anyway, which is why I got to wondering about alternatives.

On the plus side, my pillow smells nice. LoL :D Was trying to do some refilling on the head of my bed. It's a nice flat surface, pretty wide, but I did manage to drip a bit here & there when carts started being difficult.

So, I think any soaking experiments will have to stay in the kitchen! Hehe.

The best refill technique I've found so far is to 1. remove filler, 2. drip fluid almost to the top of inner cup, 3. replace filler slowly to let the juice soak into filler, 4. top off filler and dab off extra, 5. replace cup. It works pretty will with all of the various models I have tried (especially with Pyramid teabag mod) including Luci, M601/602, 510 and DSE 103. You get way more fluid into the filler and if you're careful to always angle the device slightly downward, the juice flows nicely into the atomizer.

Let's formally add the M40X series to this list. When I do a batch of cartridges, this is how I do it.

The easiest way I found to easily fill dse103's or rn4081 is I take a tooth pick or tiny little screw driver, insert from the air hole pushing the juice cart up to the top then drip or syringe fill. If the filler is really dry, I pull it out, fill tree quarters up, re-stuff and top off, couple drips on the atty and vaping we will go! I love my 510's and 901's but the 103's and 4081 are still a workhorse for great vapor to bad they hold so little juice!

Nod, that is what I have ended up doing. Too hard to get a consistent fill any other way on 103s . Seems like rather more work than it should be. And it isn't the impression one gets from advertising regarding convenience.

I just noticed that the prefilled carts were more consistent without all the messing around & it sparked the soaking idea. Really surprised I haven't seen much discussion of things along that line.

I actually have nothing bad to say about the 103, so far, other than the cart design. It's my first PV, so I can't compare to others, but the hardware has worked fine for me. I haven't had to do any messing with my attys, etc. It's a decent starter because it's simple & the auto battery makes it more familiar for newbies who are used to analogs. Some of the other models would probably be a bit intimidating for a new user. So, the PV itself is okay. The carts just sort of ruin it for me. Maybe some of the modders can invent a new cart. :p

I'm not sure if it's an older design that just isn't especially user-friendly... Or if it's an attempt by developers to make more money by having less filler & making refilling so annoying you end up buying prefilled. *Oooh conspiracy!* Hehe. But if I can figure out a good soaking method, it should work for all sorts of models & perhaps allow filling several at once without having such a process for each one. Even on the 510s which everyone loves, the videos on filling show quite a bit of shaping & dripping & poking around.

I did order a 510, but it's not here yet, so I'm tinkering with what I have. I just hate to think people who can't afford a new PV or get turned off by these carts might go back to analogs, when otherwise the 103 is a perfectly adequate device. :(

Thanks all for the tips & glad to see I've come to the same conclusions, since I already said it wasn't user error. LoL. (Would be embarrassing if I missed something obvious!)
