Looking back at my post, I didn't really answer your question fully.

I say "apparently" because Lithium Ion batteries (which the ego batteries are) are not supposed to develop the "memory" problem which plagued lower end rechargeable batteries like NiMH. In most instruction booklets, though, they tell you to completely drain the battery before charging.

So, as far as I can tell, it's up in the air as to whether or not you will hurt your batteries.

You actually extend the life of a battery when you charge it before it is completely discharged.

Let's say you can get 300 charge cycles if you drain a battery completely(100% depth of discharge) before you recharge it. If you only discharged the battery to 50% on each charge, and then recharged it, the battery would be capable of taking 1200-1500 charge cycles. That's 400-500% more life, but since you are only using it to 50%, you have to charge it twice as much, so in reality, you are getting 200-250% more life from the battery.

The lower the depth of discharge, the longer the battery will last. How to Prolong Lithium-based Batteries - Battery University

Based on the data I've seen, the optimum battery life occurs when you discharge about 50% before recharging. As previously stated, Lithium Ion batteries don't develop a "memory".

ETA: I should clarify how I define "optimum battery life". For my purposes, I define that as maximizing the amount of total amperage the battry will deliver during its useful life.

The farther you run down a lithium battery, the more stress it takes during charging. As said, Li-ion batteries don't develop memory effect and charging frequently presents less heat to the electrolyte over a shorter time. The charge current draw drops as the battery approaches full charge. A dead battery gets a higher current charge during the initial charge cycle and develops more heat in the process.

Most Li-ion batts cut off around 3.2v. If you charge them when they are at 3.5v, you will get longer life. It it's a 3.4v eGo, you can't tell because you are reading the output of the regulator instead of direct battery voltage. Just track the average vape time you normally get and stick them on the charger at half that period.

As long as it's a lithium-type battery, you won't do any damage to it by recharging before it's dead. I've recharged my batts waaay over 300 times, and they're all still kicking!

I did hear somewhere though that it's good to condition them (let them run all the way down, let them sit for awhile, then fully recharge) once a month (not that I do). ...and it wouldn't hurt you to have a backup batt or two! :)

Apparently it shortens the life span

Wrong!

So, as far as I can tell, it's up in the air as to whether or not you will hurt your batteries.

Please do not spread incorrect information! The empirical data is definitive and available for Li-ion and all batts. No supposing/guessing required!

Lol. Didn't realize people were so passionate about batteries. I apologize for my uneducated opinion. I will stay out of the Technical....er....General E-Smoking Discussion area?

Ooh, great thread. Am so accustomed to draining batteries down completely thing that I was doing the same, obsessively, with the ones for my device. They have a good charge/use cycle, so it wasn't a problem, but I was reluctant to unplug to move the charger to another socket etc. Thanks to the replies I can set up a better, more relaxed schedule which will fit better with my other activites.

please don't feel that way! the combined knowledge of every single person on this forum is what makes it the very best out there!

If you are unsure of an answer to a very critical question, your best response is to say nothing. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people on here that will respond. When a topic comes up that you are very sure of, please give your opinions!
