I have smoked for over 20 yrs and nine months of those years i was pregnant. My doc tried to prescribe me wellbutrin (sp?) but I had a violent allergic reaction to it and he said you know what just try to cut back as it was apparent to him that me quitting was causing a lot of stress. Ironically if i was smoking my blood pressure was ok if i went more than a day w/o it was dangerously high. Even though I continued to smoke until I had my lil one she was born healthy and 8.5 lbs so I was lucky in that sense. I was just wondering if there is any info out there about vapeing while being pregnant and if it is an ideal alternative to smoking combustible cigarettes? Yes I know if one is pregos they should stay away from any substances that are not healthy period and so on but what about ladies like me who have become so dependant on nicotine that the withdrawal of quitting is actually more harmful than just keeping on smoking? are these safer or do the flavors pg vg ect of ejuice cause harm on developing buns in the oven?

I'm not aware of any studies on vaping while pregnant. I really doubt there have been any done considering the lack of thorough scientific studies on vaping safety for the non-pregnant population.

I suspect you will get a lot of opinions both ways on this and some quit heated! I think compared to the dangers of smoking, vaping should be a much safer alternative if someone can not quit cigarettes. My daughter and son in law are trying to get pregnant and they both smoke. She has cut back to mostly vaping with a few cigs once in a while and he is at about 50/50 vaping/smoking right now. She will try to quit both when the time comes. If she has to vape to stay cig-free, I will support her 100%, but that's just me and my opinion on it.

it's not a good idea to use nicotine while pregnant:

The teratogenic properties of nicotine has been investigated. According to a study of ca. 77,000 pregnant women in Denmark, women who used nicotine gum and patches during the early stages of pregnancy were found to face an increased risk of having babies with birth defects. The study showed that women who used nicotine-replacement therapy in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy had a 60% greater risk of having babies with birth defects compared to women who were non-smokers.

Effective April 1, 1990, the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) of the California Environmental Protection Agency added nicotine to the list of chemicals known to cause developmental toxicity.

Dear Spirra,

I'm thrilled that your little one came out ok!

While I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that your blood pressure become dangerously high when you stopped smoking cig's I can conclusively say that you should not post to a forum when your health is involved. None of us are doctors, virtually everyone in this forum has a motive other than your health.

I know that my mother is a heavy smoker, my brother spent his first month in the hospital due to an early birth. Both of my parents were smokers and I had to have tubes installed in my ears due to the complications of living in their home.

My 21 year old daughter is now 3 months expecting and I'd give you the same advice as I gave her and that is to follow the direction of your doctor and eat well, while avoiding anything this isn't natural !

Warm Regards,
MM

Well Ryedan I hope she has more luck than I did. I wasnt planning on becomming pregnant it just happend (ty joze quervo). I was jsut curious if there were any studies about this (I should have known better). My lil one is 8 now and she is happy i am vapeing and that "I do not stink". I am happy i can vape in the car or in the house and spend more time with her and the rest of my family rather then go outside like a bad dog that just got in the garbage can. I have other friends and family that I am in the process of converting and like you I think i wold rather my girlfriends who are expecting vape rather than smoke but dunno if i should even suggest it.

It's always better tried not do anything my sister in law went down to 6 mg then zero and when she is stressed she'll hit that but she tries not too as no one knows if anything will affect it. Ultimately it's up to you and your doctor but you know he is just going to want you to drop all bad habits prego or not.

no no I am way to old to have another (at least I think so lol) this was just a matter of retro-speculation. I came to the conclusion due to the simple fact that it is what my obgyn said. If i was smoking i was fine. when I quit after a day of going w/o my legs would swell and I would go to the obgyn they take my blood pressure and freak out. I freak out sneak a cig and go back to being fine told this to my obgyn he had me come in every day for a week to check bp and what not and on the days i smoked all was good on the days i did not i was over 160/98. he then gave me wellbutrin then i had to go the er because i ws allergic to it. Yes i think everyone with an I.Q. higher than that of a pine cone knows that smoking while pregnant is stupid yet some of us still do. Just like many smokers know that smoking is killing them yet they still do. I was more or less wondering would it be considered wrong to suggest an e cig for a lady who is smoking while pregnant. Also for disclaimer purposes I hope all who read this understand that I AM NOT saying go ahead and vape while pregnant. We all know the best policy is abstinence from nicotine while pregnant.

Great information metropolitan! I Googled and could not find any information on that study other than mention in Wikipedia with no link or reference. Would really appreciate a link to it if you or anyone else have one.

E-cigarettes have got to be safer... here's my reasoning. When pregnant you want to limit any additional chemicals going through your body including medications. If you can cut out the nicotine it would be better but if it's just the nicotine it's better than all the other chemicals commonly associated with tobacco use. Vaping while pregnant is not good and not okay but better than smoking hell yes. Although vaping is surely better than jacking up your blood pressure and causing a miscarriage because that is no joke either.

No one here is a doctor, just smokers/ex-smokers giving opinions. No research done or can be presented, just a lot of google-fu.

My thinking would be that if you 100% can't stop smoking, it'd probably be better to vape. If you do a search, you'll find other threads where people have posted their doctors opinions. This being the internet- take it with a grain of salt.
