hey all, pretty new to all of this, a friend of mine gave me two of his vape, a tesla stealth 40 and a phantus mini. I also received a tank a baby smok x. Can anyone point me to resources to better understand how to use a mechanical mod like the phantus? It didn't come with a tank as he never ended up using as he said it's complicated. I like to form factor tho so I kind of want to make it work. I have been reading on basics about ohms law but it still very complicated. The tesla is fun tho and easy to use!

Keep using the Tesla for now, as you like it.

There are tons of resources and great blog postings on mechanical mods. You may try posting your question in that subforum, or I'm sure some experts will be along to help.

You are going to have a learning curve, and that's okay. You'll get to vape it, but mech mods have NO safety protections, they are not a starter's device. You will have to learn more about battery safety, ohm's law, how to build and install coils, there is a ton to learn. But, you absolutely can learn it, just don't be in a rush that's how many new mech users run into difficulty.

I'm pretty sure someone will be along with some helpful links for you. Welcome to ECF.

Also, in the meantime, you certainly can get a tube style regulated mod inexpensively if you like that form factor, fairly inexpensively online. Here's a link to get you started: What is The Best Tube Mod in 2018? - Vaping Insider

Thank you for the posts and information. Definitely not rushing into the mech. I do like these sidecar style mods it's just appeals to me a lot.

He did provide a battery it's purple when I checked I will have to see again what exactly it is. No charger tho I will look for one on the weekend.

You may not want to do that.
1) that is an old fashioned protruding button mech mod. There is a list of things you both MUST and MUST NEVER do if you are to use it safely. One is NEVER EVER put it in your pocket unless the safety (assuming there even is one) is on, or it is rendered harmless by pulling the battery or some such. Ive ruined two pairs of pants having 18350 mechs have their batteries go off in my pocket. I was very very lucky and they were both a particularly safe chemistry that is no longer available. If you put it in your pocket and the button gets pressed and stays pressed by your keys or coins or whatever you could wind up in the emergency room with a baseball sized hole burned in your leg. The thing is dangerous unless handled correctly.
Another is you MUST use a correctly sized coil for the output of the particular battery you are using. This is the complicated math bit. coil sizing is governed by ohms law. put too low a resistance coil on that thing any you again risk blowing a battery and the aforementioned ambulance ride.

2) 18350/18490/18500 (not sure which it uses) batteries are difficult to get. they're not used very often any more. You will have to mail order, and its probably wise to test their amperage output so you can do the aforementioned math correctly.

3) there is a reason no one uses them anymore: they're tiny. If you want to vape all day using them youll need to carry 5 or 6 of them and keep swapping them out.

Hi and welcome. I really do recommend staying away from the mechs until you learn more about it, and until you become a competent coil builder. Life is safer that way. Maybe longer, too. Mechs can be, and are, used safely every day. I've been doing it for years. There are many people around her, including me, who will be happy to teach you how. But not yet, though. Get an RDA or RTA and learn to build coils first.

I have been reading on basics about ohms law but it still very complicated.

I havent seen a 350 device or battery in ages . That little mod is pretty cool, but i would keep it mostly for novelty. I used to have a few 18350 devices. I would have to carry 4 extra batteries because they would die within an hour. I wouldnt go below .8 ohms on them either they are very easy to overload. I love tiny mods myself. Here is a pic of my c.o.v. next to my battlestar which is a pretty compact device for what it is.

It has 1200 mah and can do 40 watts. At least double in both categories as an 18350 and is almost as small as a 350 battery.

To everyone, I appreciate all the information and the links given, and the last picture top! I have a lot to mentally digest, I do want to keep my self safe so for now I'm probably going to admire the mech mod from a distance before I really understand about coils etc.
If you want to geti nto mech mods try a non hybrid 18650 to start with and get some good batteries. Samsung 25r (the green ones) they are cheap and good
I found an authentic vanilla mod for $50. These are good devices for learning mechanicals. I think you wil have a much better experience with it. Until you really know what you ars doing I would avoid 350 mods and hybrids. (Atomizer connects directly to battery) 350s are really easy to overload and hybrids are really easy to dead short

I have almost that same set up except my Derringer is copper. Minivolt is small enough to stick in my jeans coin pocket that way.

It came with a copper cap but I got out of the car and it fell off my lap and got trashed. Got the brass one for $5 at the vape shop arou d the corner.love the tiny setup.
