However, the article goes on to say that it's making some prisoners ill, that a majority of inmates are smoking the patches , and that the prison director, in January, said there had been no major problems implementing the smoking ban. "The majority wanted to stop, they've coped very well, we've got a very good project team who actually got some smoking cessation assistance going on, we've got self help programs, we've got some that are coping better that others, to date we are coping very well."

"Cruel and unusual"? No Sir, we're just making them healthier!

Passive agressive? Hypocrytical? Cruel and unusual - yes! I think that makes it unconstitutional when done in the US. Don't know about Australia.

They should offer them vaping. That might reduce the smoking a lot, if they give them coaching, etc like they're doing with their chosen quitting methods.

The video they have near the end of the article tells the story a bit better, including talking about the agression that's starting to build. there and in other prisons where they've banned smoking.

They do offer e cigs in some prisons in US. And they've been heavily attacked for doing that.

You know, if Dr. Antz has a financial interest in tobacco Control, that's Ok because it's for a noble cause, but if a prison has a financial interest in giving access to ecigs instead of having inmates smoke patches, that's really really bad, as it's immoral and 're-normalizes smokin' etc.

And don't forget that old chestnut about prison isn't supposed to be "fun"... well no fecal matter, sherlock, but if they want to control the prisoners, they could easily use e-cigs as rewards for *good* behavior, and deprivation of them as punishment.

I don't think offering e-cigs constitutes making prison "fun" -- but it might help make it bearable, particularly for that majority of inmates who already suffer some mental/emotional dysfunction.

Nice little earner for BP and their useless patches and gum................... also nice little earner for the microwave manufacturer's
"A prison guard who did not want to be identified claimed medium security had been through about 20 microwaves since January."
I would not be surprised if BP sold this scheme to the Prison's department down here, and it would not surprise me to hear from Simon Chapman soon claiming success!..........idiots.
