Problem with profile picture

I uploaded profile photo from my pictures on my computer and it said it failed but it does show. The only problem is that the image that it shows is still in the original pixel size. Why is that? Other images that I see are not small like that. What am I missing here?

Edit: Just noticed after posting that the pic that I uploaded is not showing with my user name on the left side either.

The forum won't make a picture larger, it will only scale them down to fit.

When you get a picture that works you need to go to Edit Avatar. It's a little further down on the same page. That will allow it to show up next to your name in your post.

I just uploaded the pic without resizing and it worked. Then did the same for the avatar and it worked as you can see by the fact that somehow the program here went and changed my original posting and inserted the avatar I chose.
