There are all sorts of articles all over saying all sorts of things... at least if you don't read them carefully when you might realise that they imply a lot and say less.

But the medical professionals agree that electronic cigarettes are between 95 and 98% safer than tobacco cigarettes. Even so, they have still not found anything that might account for that 2-5%. So far, they appear to be 100% safe. There may be something that comes to light in the next 40 years, like it did with cigarettes, but nobody has any idea what it is.

All of those scary articles are rehashing the same tired argument: "there's bad chemicals in there." Yes there are, but at levels far below a tobacco cigarette and in about the same quantities as the same chemicals are found in a nicotine inhaler or patch, and in many cases in lower amounts than we consume in many "safe" forms, such as aubergines or by commuting to work.

They're healthiER... than smoking. Other than inhaling clean air, nothing is "healthy." If you find any clean air, be sure to let everyone know! ;)

All that rot in the media is just big money flexing its muscles, because they own the media, and they're scared -- of losing money. The media loves scare stories, so they're just lapping it up without any judgment at all.

If they reported a REAL scare story, such as "tobacco Control will soon be out of a job, Big Pharma may only make 10 trillion this year instead of 50 trillion, and Big Tobacco is losing its shirt, thanks to e-cigs" they'd probably get canned.

It depends are you doing it safely? I'll be honest that you should research. Stick with trusted brands of liquid and trusted brands of equipment. With that said I've read numbers posted 78% safer to 95% in the chemical spectrum. There are no real clear cut answers after the few years it's been out and no clinical data really on large panels for say 10 to 20 years down the road. I'm sure it's much safer than cigarettes.

The only draw back I've seen is people making basement juice that has harmful side effects. But if you want a first hand account I've vaped since 08 and only feel better and better everyday. I quit smoking after ten years in the past three months saved a ton with no side effects present when I went last month for my check up.

You've vaped since 08 and feel better and better everyday?

Now that I'm planing to quit smoking and I googled it and says that electronic cigarette is better for quit smoking. And also there are some news said electronic cigarette is bad for health. As you start vape since 08, is there any suggestions for a good vape pen and maybe some good brands of liquid? Thanks!

I'll just leave this here:

Electronic Cigarette | www.ecigarette-research.com

In short, it isn't healthy, but safer than smoking by many, many, many orders of magnitude. To properly convey that, most of the things present in a cigarette aren't in ecig vapor (carbon monoxide among one), and of the ones that are you're usually talking 5-10% of what's in a cigarette.

E-cigarettes are the best way to quit smoking ever invented. I smoked for 39 yrs, tried 4 times to quit, never managed it till I tried e-cigarettes, and when I started, it was merely a "let's see what happens" experiment -- what happened was that over a month's time I went from a pk a day to 1 cigarette a day, at which time I figured if e-cigs allowed me to manage only 1 a day, I could manage without it, and I was right.

There may be some individuals for whom e-cigarettes are bad for their health, but for those who smoke, vaping is 95%-99% better for their health than continuing to smoke. Cigarette smoke has some 4,000 chemicals, most of them dangerous, some of them addictive, and a few of them downright deadly and carcinogenic; in e-cigarette vapor, you might find *traces* of a FEW of those chemicals, but the levels are so low that they are barely even identifiable, certainly many, many times less than what is found in cigarette smoke. The exhaled vapor is not hazardous to anyone, except possibly cats (propylene glycol is bad for cats), and perhaps those who may be so severely allergic to something in the vapor that even traces brings on an allergy attack.

The only thing about e-cigarettes that's so far not known is their long-term effect, simply because they are still new enough, there hasn't yet been time for long-range studies. But it seems self-evident to me, that if something is not harmful NOW, there seems very little risk that it would be harmful in the long-term.

Andria, I started smoking since I was in high school. I tried to quit smoking several times and failed, then I smoke heavier each day.
Do not know how the result of electronic cigarette will be, maybe failed again. And still I want to have a try, so many people are succeed like you.:p

The electronic cigarettes are looks nice. Looks different, this might made me be unique from my friends. LOL

I don't know much about electronic cigarette, and all of you looks very professional in this. I hope I can learn more from you guys and can quit smoking soon.

BTW, what's the main difference of smoke and vapor? The vapor also likes smoke I think.

Smoke is produced when material is actually combusting, whether it is a tobacco leaf or paper which is part of why it has many bad things in it. Vapor is produced at a much lower temperature, and is more like what you see rising from a kettle or mug. It is a mixture of water, propylene glycol, vegetible glyericin, flavorings and nicotine.

The short answer is: NO.
E-cigs are a clean way to dispense nicotine to the body. Nicotine is not good. It raises blood pressure and depresses nerve transmission, and it is extremely addictive and produces cravings when not assumed anymore. In a hindsight, I would have never started to smoke. Is to be recognised that, seen the level of dependance caused by nicotine, it is almost impossible to quit without some assistance.
Smoking tobacco adds insult to injury, because you smoke to get some nicotine (and other substances of the same class and effect, like anabasine and myosmine which are also contained in tobacco plant), but you get something really not wanted, like carbon monoxyde and tar, plus hundreds of other contaminants, including heavy metals.
E-cig delivers only nicotine, assuming you use good quality e-liquids. Brand e-liquids are prepared with medicinal-grade polypropilene glycols and glicerine, which are mostly harmless. Somebody voiced the possibility that industrial-grade substances may end up in e-liquids since the very high markup they command; I have no info on this.
E-cigs are much much better than tobacco smoke, as you only get the nicotine; can say that they are useful in minimising the harm caused by nicotine assumption.
In no case e-cigs are healthy, as nicotine is not healthy. Even if - this is my personal opinion - the hunt for smokers is an unnecessarily punitive behavior proposed by society as a whole; nicotine is bad, but not so bad to warrant hiding cigarettes in stores, printing disgusting pictures on packets and pouches, and getting to the point of almost criminalise the gesture of bringing something to your mouth.
E-cigs are a very rational replacement to tobacco, as they minimise the harm of smoking. I'm grateful to have been given the possibility to switch from pipe to e-cig, and I am hungry to the stupidity and greed of those trying to remove this possibility to former tobacco smokers. As I am hungry at those manufacturers and sellers that compare the price of their stuff to tobacco products, drawing too many undue attentions to e-cigs: one EU Country, from January, is already taxing e-liquids just like tobacco, to say only one.
In the back of my head, there is a tought running... I need to quit. I quit tobacco with e-cigs, I can breath much much better, I gained more energy, and many other positive effects. I now switched from 2.4% to 1.8% e-liquid and felt the benefit.
I tried patches and gums but they don't work. E-cig does. Eventually, I may end up smoking zero-nicotine e-cig, as the gesture and smoke production remain very rewarding psycologically, and that will suffice to me.
Nicotine in e-cig is NOT healthy!
