Protank Micro coil help!!!

I've been making some small micro coils for my pro tank with 30ga kathal. I just received some 28ga kanthal to try to make the same 1.8ohm coil but with having more surface area. I watched a video on YouTube of a guy using 28ga kanthal wrapped 12 times around a 5/64th drill bit. Then compressed and heated the wire. I did everything the exact same but guess what?! Its too damn wide to fit in the atomizer. 11 wraps fits too tight and 10 wraps looks perfect but I keep getting low ohm error on my zmax v3. Pulled out the multi-meter and the 11 wrap is only reading 1 ohm. How in the hell did this guy get 1.8ohm and get it to fit?? I'm lost.

Just watched the video, have seen some of his others first, but not that one. It looks like its a very tight fight with those 12 wraps of his. Is your coil staying nice and tight after you torch it? As far as the ohm reading, where are you measuring it from? gotta remember that the leads will go down the head a bit so you need to test it fully assembled, not just at the ends of the coil.

Try increasing the diameter of the coil slightly or doubling the wire at the legs. Search hot legs for more on that one.

Yes the coil as tight as possible without the wraps overlapping. 10 wraps with doubling the wires at the end sounds like it could work. And yes I tested it fully assembled.

28awg at 10 wraps would give me about 1.2ohms. Wrapped around a LARGE paper clip. Not the small sized paper clips, I feel that it takes a tad slower to heat up, and goes through juice faster.

I prefer 30awg with 9 wraps at about 1.5 to 1.7 ohms. But it's all personal preference. Gotta experiment and find what works for you.

Haven't seen the video you talked about, but with 12 wraps of 28 awg, it's going to be hard to fit into the protank.

Doubling the legs might not help, cause you're gonna find it a pita to push the rubber grommet in.

I would use the 32ga for the protank you will get a higher ohm much easier.

I'm using a vamo with a evod right now, and I like it better then my twist.

Ya just need to get the stainless steal one. The threads are better on them . I have a chromes one and the 510 threads are so stripped out now I cant use anything but ego threaded attys .

But if ya insist on one other then the SS one, get a airflow controller, it screws into the 510 connection and you leave it on forever. You screw your atty into the airflow controller instead so you don't mess up the threads on the vamo

nightengale, it seems that you can get better coils by making your own, at least you'll know its how you want it I'm making coils for my wife she vapes. Makes me excited for her since she wants a bigger TH and seems to be the way to get it w/o having to go sub 1 ohm and mechanical. Its also cheaper and you can experiment with cotton, stainless steel mesh, and silica however you want for your wicks.


edit: PS the Vamo V3 is a very good mod from what I can tell, got the wife one and it looks great, works well with some Panasonic 18650Bs she gets about 2.5 days or so from those. I would recommend it for a cheaper mod that works well for beginners from my experience. (By proxy I guess since again I don't vape just the wife does )

I've done 30ga wraps around the same 5/64th drill bit and 6 wraps is around 1.5. I just wanted to try the 28ga because it would create more surface area at the same resistance that I've been using. Maybe a bigger bit and doubling the ends might do the trick

Derek, I believe your coil size falls out of range of microcoils. Microcoils work not because of surface area, but rather thermal transfer (can't remember the correct scientific term) between the coils. A wire with 5 wraps around a large bore would have the same surface area in contact with the wick as the same wire with 10 wraps around a smaller bore. But the one with 10 wraps would heat up faster and more consistently.

With a lower gauge (thicker wire), you have more area in contact with wick, BUT, it takes longer to heat up.

But hey, it's fun to play around to find what works for you. What works for me may not be your cup of tea. Try the different gauges and bore size to find your preferred setup. Even the device you pair it with makes a difference.

I routinely use 8 wraps of 30 gauge Kanthal around a 1/16 drill bit on all my Kanger heads.. Comes in at about 1.8-2.0 ohms, my target resistance for use on my Vamo V3 SS and eVic.
