I like the fill system too. I've found that closing off the air flow, which I'm sure you do, and putting my finger over the tip eliminates any hot spit back after filling. When I wasn't covering the tip I had issues.

Yes, any time you have that ring up you want the air fill closed and tip covered. I also try to avoid tilting it much while filling. Good luck, I hope it makes your experience after filling more enjoyable!
