Question about dry burning iClear 16

So I followed what looked to be a nice Youtube video about how to dry burn the iClear 16. But when I did it, it seemed like my wick got charred in no time flat, so I had to toss it. Cheap to replace, but what did I do wrong? It didn't seem to happen to his in the video.

I use CE+4 tanks and rebuild my coils using 5 wraps of 32ga Kanthal and Ekowool 2mm or 3mm wick material. The Ekowool gets whiter as you dry burn.

Maybe the original wicks are cotton? That might be why they char.

Here's an old pic of mine with 3mm wick. I currently use 2mm.
