question about the wick

i think the wick in my 510 is burnt. i pulled a little piece out and the end was black. is this caused by dry burning? what can i do about it, if anything. now i can see pieces of the wick, partially burned all inside the atty. should i just use a new one, or can i salvage the one i have?

it will still work fine.. clean it with alcohol or hot water.. it might not wick as well as a new one but is fine to use..

order a few new ones though.. if you look through the forums some attys die in a few weeks others die in months.. always best to have backups laying around than to have the only one die on you

Or you can get some tweezers and remove all those filaments and use it for strictly dripping : -)

It wont hurt it but it needs to be in place to work well.

I have had a few brand new 510 attys where the loop of fiberglass wasn't even tucked in under the nickel foam and the steel bridge. Check them before using them because its easier to tuck it in while new.

That's pretty good life for an atty. There are many ways to clean them. I boil distilled water, take it off the flame and then let it sit in there for like 15 minutes swishing it around. Yours sounds like it's pretty bad, you may want to try the CPH mouthwash method as many have had success with this removing burnt deposits.
