Question on cartridge life

Hi everyone. I'm new to e-cigs. I just got my DSE901 today, and I am quite happy with it. I did notice that the out-of-the-box cartridge had little or no wick in it, but I replaced it with one of the back-ups (wick right up to the open edge) and it is vaping great!
My question is this: How can I tell when there is no juice left in the cartridge? I am guessing that it will stop vaping? Is there another indicator? Like a different taste?
I only have the one atomizer that came with the kit (so far, but another one is on order) and I am fearful that if I try to draw on it and the cartridge is too dry, I'll burn it up or something =/ Sometimes I worry too much.

I'm no expert but this has been my experience: when it comes time to 'top up' the e-liquid in the cart, you'll start noticing a decrease in flavor. If you keep pulling on the thing without having added more juice, you'll begin noticing a kind of unpleasant taste -- 'atomizer flavor'. It's unmistakeable -- a kind of acrid, even metallic sort of taste. I use both the 801 and the 510. I haven't found that either type of atomizer completely stops producing vapor when the cart runs low. But then I haven't pushed the issue too far, either.

I remember reading that if you keep 'pulling' on a cart when there isn't enough juice wicking onto/into the atomizer bridge, you could eventually damage the atomizer, or at least compromise it somehow enough that in the future the flavor would never be as good again even with an adequate juice supply. As I say, I haven't tried pushing my luck that way so I don't know from personal experience what the worst case would be.

Well, after about 4 hours of semi-frequent vapes, I got my answer: It just stopped producing much vapor at all. I switched to the next pre-filled cartridge and I'm back in business! But still, good to know.
