I've been following the news regarding the weather in the South. We (up here in Chicago) can't understand how 2" of snow can cripple the region. I suppose not having the proper equipment to deal with the snow makes all the difference.

Yep, that's it exactly -- the only plows/
salt trucks are on the interstates; all the other roads become impassable, so folks just get out and leave their cars, so then they're REALLY impassable.
And actually, it wasn't even snow, this time -- 3 inches, 90% sleet, 10% rain/snow mix that then froze. Just a huge mess! Today it's 45 degrees, dripping so much it sounds like it's raining! And the roads are clearing up, so I guess everyone gets to go to work tomorrow. Thank god!
