I am 70, heading for 71. Love this whole vaping thing--of course you need to know that I am a huge fan of "toys," especially electronics, and this vaping thing is just plain fun for me. I DID want to quit smoking, and about time, too. I have been really, really lucky to have smoked most of my adult life and still have no ill effects, but the time comes when you think maybe you don't want to press your luck any more. Also two things happened when I retired that made me think I needed to give up the smokes--since I was home all day, I was smoking more and more, and the cost of cigs just kept going up, which wasn't so great for that fixed income thing. I was spending a lot on cigarettes and that was $$ I could spend on things I wanted more. So the desire to quit and the factors that made it more appealing to quit led me to my very first e-cig and since then not even a thought of a cigarette. I doubt I am ever going to get into all this modifying and so forth (though you never know) but I am on the hunt for the best battery for my use (something that will last all day or at least most of it as opposed to a couple of hours) and the best tastes in juice. Old or young, though, I don't think anyone is going to give up the analogs for vaping unless they really want to quit smoking.

You told my story exactly. I will be 72 in April, and despite smoking all my adult life, I seem to be in good health in spite of it. I also was feeling the pinch of the cost of cigarettes since I retired. There are so many more fun things to spend money on than cigarettes. I "needed" them, but I felt so guilty and resentful every time I bought another carton. I went to the cheapest generics, but they still cost a bundle of money. I couldn't be happier about vaping, and it's working so well for me.

I have other hobbies to spend my money on, so this will not likely get hobby status for me. I've found a set up I like, juice that is good and inexpensive, so I'm good to go.

Congrats to both of us for making this decision before we did more harm to ourselves.:)

I'm about a month into all this and having the time of my life while not smoking! In April I will be 72, married 49 years, grandmother of 18!

One of my young adult granddaughters found out I was vaping and called me. She said she was very interested for herself. I ordered a Kanger starter kit for her birthday present, and when it arrived she came over and I "taught" her how to vape. She left with her new kit and a big smile on her face. She says all her 20-something friends think she has the coolest grandma ever.

Clearly she does. 35 male here and got my 72 year old mother hooked on a kanger evod with 2 juices and she loves it. She was maybe having a stink or 3 a day and losing the battle of quitting over the last 2 years. I said screw that, pointed her to the katana starter kit at vapedojo.com on the cheap and told her to go to her local vape shop, try a bunch of juice and buy a couple. She got a few coils and hasn't looked back 2 weeks in. I am a month in with my wife and it's our new hobby together, not just quitting smoking.

Hi and this is an interesting topic. I think there are lots of paths that folks start vaping, no matter our age. I am in my 50's and have been vaping for just over 4 months. Had a good friend, also in his 50's, recommend it and he helped me get my first kit (after I read a bunch here in ECF, but hadn't joined yet, just was lurking).

Now I am talking to some of my younger smoking friends about vaping, but trying not to be too pushy. Just letting them know how much I like it and how much better I feel. So far, one friend has started vaping (still smoking, but she's down to a few analogs a day from 1 1/2 packs, so that is progress).

For me, I think being a bit older and more in touch with my mortality increased my openness to vaping and I tried to take the switch pretty seriously (though now it has become plain old fun). One of the most important parts of my life today is that I am tobacco free and I thoroughly enjoy vaping.

Keep the vape and namaste.

I've been reading a lot on this forum about people buying e-cigs and such for their mothers, fathers and other older
friends and relatives. Many of the posts talk about the recipient not being able or willing to make the transition. I wonder what the barriers are?

I am 57 and I am embracing this change. Are there lots of vapers my age or older and it just isn't really talked about?
I realize that I am making this choice myself, and maybe that is what the big difference is.

This has really got me thinking. (Also pictures of Leonard Nimoy with an oxygen tank in a wheelchair talking about having COPD and at 82 quitting smoking 30 years too late. Sigh.)

To touch on the OP's main question or maybe the most important: the BARRIERS:
1- You have to want to quit or it ain't happening
2- You buy the wrong or faulty equipment (or not maintaining/learning how) OR expect it to exactly replace all aspects of smoking
3- You only have one e-device: get minimum of two, hopefully the same/interchangeable or a two-kit
4- You don't find a flavor right away that satisfies, or you expect a tobacco flavor to be just like a stinky
5- Your sense of taste and smell start changing so your fave flavors may/will also change

Just to name a few.

Oh, and I almost forgot, SUPPORT! But if you can't or don't get that at home or work, you can get PLENTY RIGHT HERE! My wife is not ready to quit, and picks on me about "the silliness of those stupid toys, what a waste of *cough, cough* money!" Almost a month no analogs and my cough is gone. Keep calm and vape on, good luck!

Hey there Karmae! My grandfather is 77 and has been smoking since he was 7, yes I said 7! I got him started vaping and he is loving it! Granted a 70 year old habit is hard to break. But he has almost kicked real cigarettes to the curb, and he has only been vaping for about a month now.

A couple things that deter cigarette smokers from vaping, is once they try it for the first time they have a bad experience. A bad experience can come from an ejuice that has way to high content of pg. another is they try to drag on it like an actual cigarette, which you cannot do.

Make sure when you go to a shop for the first time, try to take someone that is knowledgeable, or if you can't do that. Make sure to ask as many questions as you can, and tell them your habits.

I hoped this helped, and if you want any suggestions, or have any questions. Feel free to send me a message. I would be more than happy to help!

Hi. I've noticed that after starting vaping at an advanced age that there were many things wrong with me previously that I didn't even know about, for instance I notice that my teeth are now a lot whiter all of a sudden and my skin is a lot cleaner. Looking back in time, what with all of the other improvements that quitting the stinkies have accomplished, I was actually pretty disgusting. I have to wonder how I ever had any relationships - oh wait, they were always with other smokers. Eg: Vaping Peppermint and drinking Vodka on ice vs Smoking cigars and drinking Scotch. Now if only I could wake up in the morning and be 21 again.

Hi there, I'm nearly 5.. 5... 5... Nope. Can't say it yet. Anyway, I live on the Isle of Wight, a small Island of the south coast of England. E-cigarettes have only been around down here for about two years but I started with an internet kit (GreenSmoke) about three months ago and haven't looked back. Love it. No more fags for me. (Oops, that's English speak for cigarettes!). Over here, it seems to be mainly people of our age group who are using them. All the younger ones seem to be girls, and then only when they're in bars etc. I must say though, I don't quite get all of this different liquids and odd looking devices, living where I do, I'd imagine it will be at least five years before that kind of product gets over here! (For all in the USA, picture Amity Island from the Jaws films!).

Best wishes! :)

Its a bit the other way around here. I'm 70 (was 68 when I started vaping) and my step-son let me try his cigalike when he visited. By comparison to later gear it was pretty pathetic but just with two puffs it did convince me it wasn't for sissies (I guess high nic.) I took the plunge by coming here to research before buying my own gear and am so happy I did. Since then I've encouraged the young and middle-aged to take it up... but not anyone underage. That's simply because I don't know any underage people who openly smoke. I think there are a whole lot of elder vapers here as we are truly the "smoking generation" and feeling the affects of so many years smoking. I'm always amazed by the younger ones who come in here with stories about "the look" they got from some "old person" who saw them vaping. I don't know what world they live in. Its the young nanny-staters who give ME that look. I don't mean to go OT turning this into political ideology and sure hope it doesn't go that way but, truly, elders like myself grew up in a much more "live-and-let-live" world that seemed much less judgemental and more open to trying new things... classically independent I guess. I would never hesitate to introduce an elder to vaping... especially if it might help them out.

I'm 48 and just started 2 months ago. It wasn't for not trying but I hadn't found anything that worked. Until now! Vaping has saved me so much. Money, breath, insurance copays, and most of all.....smelling bad! There are a lot of us out here that have tried everything under the sun prior to finding vaping. Most without success. I don't think it has anything to do with age. I believe it has to do with willingness. It has been said that where the head goes the ... will follow. If you get your mind right, no matter your age, you will be able to drop the analogs and Vape On! Keep after it and form us "old folks". Thanks!

From that is! Senility getting the best of me these days along with auto correct!

It is a different experience. I had a hard time with the feel of the ecig and that was a cig-a-like. Also the analogue gives a good jolt with each puff. It is better to start with a higher nicotine level so not to feel like "sucking air".

I comment on a preceding post (Patkin). I am also somewhat advanced in chronological age and have also noticed the panty-waist, PCers look at me askance from time to time for my dinosaur-like behaviours. My nephew fancies himself a real intellectual avant-gardiste but if I have more than one drink or God forbid light up a cigarette (in the past) he just about wets himself, and yet I look at his bibliography and it turns out that one of his "greatest positive influences" is Allen Ginsberg's Howl!

This is a great thread! I'm 57 and started vaping a little over 3 months ago. Once I got some quality kit instead of the Blu's I have been smoke free. I've been lucky in that I haven't even had cravings for a tobacco cig. I travel a LOT for work and haven't had the cat's away so the mice will play idea about picking up a pack while out on the road. Actually it's kind of nice to be able to vape in a plane restroom on a long cross country flight with no worries. I leave it smelling better than when I went in...

As others have said, you have to want to quit for it to work and it was my time after 40+ years @ a PAD. Boy has vaping worked for me...
