RBA coil question.

Hi there, how is everyone?

This is sort of a specific question, as I've never used RBAs before. I just got a new Volcano atomizer the other day and it already gave out, and I'm seriously thinking I should switch to RBAs. I figure they have got to be cheaper in the long run, because even though a roll of the coil stuff costs like 10 bucks I imagine it probably lasts long enough to make like 10 atomizers. I mean correct me if I'm wrong in that assumption, but anyhow...

What I am looking for is...
2-2.5 ohms
3.8-4.2 volts

I'm looking into getting the Igo W so keep in mind this would be dual coil, although I could only wrap one coil if I wanted. Given average coil length, can anyone tell me which gauge of coil would be ideal (for both single & dual coils)? Granted this is highly dependent on how well I build/rebuild them, but I figured some experienced people might be able to use the resistance/voltage/average coil lenght/number of coils, some of you might be able to give me an answer at least as far as what seems to work for you.

And don't worry, my mod has both a hot spring & short-circuit protection, as well as an ohms reader.

Thanks!

I'm fairly new to rebuilding but I've been using the Kanthal Coil Calculator that quite a few ECF members have suggested to other people. It's extremely easy to use. You just enter the wire gauge, the diameter of the form you're using (i.e. drill bit), the number of wraps (turns) you want to do, and it will calculate the ohms you should achieve. Keep in mind that the total ohms assumes a single coil, so if you're doing dual coil you'll need to half the total.

For the ohms you're looking for I entered 32 AWG at 12 wraps using a 5/64 drill bit (1.9844mm). This gave an ohm total of 4.019, so for a dual coil setup you'd get your desired 2ohms. 15 wraps would give you about 4.952 ohms (single) or about 2.5 ohms (dual).

Hope that helps.

IMHO I wouldn't go for the IGO-W. I have one (the first dripper I ever purchased) and it has a major drawback. Although it obviously supports dual coils there is only one air hole. Ideally you want to position the hole near the coil to get the most vapor production. So you do this for one coil but the other gets no air at all and consequently that coil overheats... all the time.
If you are using silica wick you probably wont notice it but I use cotton so I'm forever having to replace the wick.
Plus the connecting posts are not too brilliant especially when connecting two coils.

On the plus side the vape is very warm so if warm vape is your thing you'll be very happy.

I use .2mm Kanthal (can never get my head around the American guage thing), 8-9 wraps around a 3mm former dual coil will get you up to about 2 ohm.

I find the Igo-W a perfect starter as all the ones I have purchased come with two holes now. I still drill the holes out because I like the air flow (3/32" seems to be perfect for me as it allows the air to flow but tends to keep a majority of my juice in the device when I do accidently overfill). I run the LaveTube V2.5, Igo-W with a single coil 32ga kanthal. My coil is wrapped around 3mm ecowool. I have found the 6-7 full wraps tends to run 2.2-2.9 ohm. I only have my device to test with and if its to low it won't fire so I like that aspect of the device. That is my only advice for you. Hope you find what you like. Plenty of help around here.

learn ohms law!! 30 ga. kanthal wire will be sufficent for your needs, a 1/8" drill bit to wind the coils onto, 5-7 wraps will give you 1.2-2.2 ohms, and a roll of wire will make not only 10 coils but 400 coils (100' roll)

What do you mean by gave out? Did the coil pop or is it just gunked up?

In theory, rba's are less expensive in the long run. A high quality rba will provide years of service, and as ones build improves so does the vape. 100' of wire can be had for $7.75, if using cotton for wick $4 will buy you a lifetime supply of cotton balls. Problem being, once you've gone to the rba side, there is no turning back, and the quest to find one that out performs the current one begins. And one soon discovers that the best value in an rba is the Authentic High End models. Getting clones is a crap shoot, for every decent clone rba, you probably have to go through 3 or 4 disappointing clones to find one good one, and still one usually has to mod it to vape as well as the Authentic.

So if you only get one, or two, yeah then, hmm, not going to happen. lmao. But have found that this is the best route to continually improve ones vape, and get the most satisfaction and joy out of your vape gear. I prefer rba tanks, like the Russian, Flash-e-Vapor V2, the Aqua, Taifun, Kayfun.... Something that can hold 3-6 ml of juice so I can fill and just vape. I do have on rda, but find dripping to be a pain, and the vape from a great rba is just as good and flavorful as an rda, if not better. I use my rda mainly just to test new juice recipes and new builds. A couple of my rba's are also rda's, can be used in tank or drip mode, I prefer tank.

When starting out building, I got a selection of different wire gauges, till I found what I preferred., got some 28, 30 and 32. For the ohm builds I like, .3-2 ohms, I found 28 awg suits my needs best. Easier to handle and wrap and works great for all my current rba's. Just started experimenting with ribbon wire and different twisted wire combos with great success.

The world of rba's is fantastic, but take it slowly, buy a good one to start with, get competent at building, find the style you like, and go from there. Once mastered, or at least competent, find rba's to be the most fiddle free way to vape.

Igo-W has 2 air holes. If yours doesn't I'd suspect fakery. There is really no way to say 'x' wraps will be 'x' ohms. It depends on the size/spacing/leg length and of course gauge of your coil. I'd recommend highly that you start with 30 gauge. Doing dual coil (which doesn't always work out so well on regulated device) will (as said) half the resistance, hence double the amp draw on your battery. Find out the amp limitation on your battery. If it does have an over current protection it likely won't fire at all.

What device are you using? This will help us advise you. Also get a multimeter, and learn to use it, and why you need to know how to use it. If you have any questions or any of this sounds crazy just pm or post. Hope this helps.

Not necessarily true...the Igo W was known to have an early and revised version...the differences are 1 vs 2 holes, and the length of the post screws........

I find the IGO-W a cloud chaser tinker thing due to it's large chamber and 2 holes...not that there is any thing wrong w/ that.

I wish factory would punch one hole through and just dimple second hole address for easy drill.

Good thing is there are many options for later purchasing a single hole cap.

For quality vapor I prefer small chamber one air hole toppers with single coil.

I love UD quality to price ratio.
