You can keep a coil for a long time. Just heat it up to red hot/glowing and release then stick it under some water. All the while being careful not to let water go into the mod. It will get rid of all the gunk and look like new. I personally like rebuilding often, so I dont usually do that. About once a week.
So would you say keeping the same coil would not decrease "firing lag" if you keep the same coil? Other than that, I feel as if my mod fires a little slow versus when I first got it. My current setup is a Metal Moose Brass Contact + *Douge V2 // 5 wrap Gorilla Wire.
I know what you're talking about OP- I totally notice a change with an old coil...but...you don't have to change the coil necessarily.

I would not run a red hot coil under cold or even hot water, it will change the molecular structure of the metal. They temper metal by heating it and then cooling it at a certain rate, it changes the behavior or the metal. I have not experienced any performance decline from any of my builds from age thus far. As far as cleaning the gunk off I would remove the wicking material and burn off what ever is caked on your coil, then when it cools gently scrub it with a tooth brush or very mild metal brush and rinse it off...Re wick it and game on!!
I generally rebuild my tanks once a week. If I'm feeling lazy just a dry burn and rewick.
