It seems a hit and miss thing, getting good flavor out of your juice via a correctly wrapped coil. I've been told by those at a local B&M that the hotter the coil the better the flavor, so sub-ohm in the way to go. They have also told me that it's better to use ribbon wire than 28 ga. kanthal so I've been using that, but I can't seem to get the flavor out of the juice that I have in the past. I can wrap a coil that looks perfect, but it just doesn't deliver on the flavor, and I get either tasteless vapor or warm vapes that are a bit harsh.

Now I know this could be from hot spots on the coil and I also know that there are ways to work those out so the coil glows uniformly all the way down, but when I try I get nowhere with it or it pops the coil and I have to start over. I'm quite sure that many others here have gone through this, winding coil after coil after coil, but there must be some trick to it I've not seen on the YouTube videos or been shown at the B&M's around here.

So I'm feeling kind of lost right now. I have a ribbon wire coil on my rba right now running at .7 ohms, and I'm getting warm harsh vapes, which I take to mean it's got a hot spot, but I've been mucking about with that for many hours since yesterday and I just get nowhere. Every time I try to work out the hot spot, which is always at the top loop of the coil, it pops. Bummer in the summer...

I pulse it just like I've been shown, but I can't seem to get the hot spot out of the coil before it pops. I think it's grounding out on the wick sometimes, but I can't seem to work that out either. So if you veterans have any helpful advice I would be most appreciative.

Just some thoughts. You didn't say which RBA you are using so this will be general.

Your coils could be shorting at the wick hole if it is not insulated or oxidized there.
Popping the top coil can be caused by the wick being too close to the pos post, too far or too high of voltage.
Your coil wraps might not be tight enough around the wick.
Wick isn't properly oxidized.
Since you are using sub ohms a mech mod is recommended since VV is not designed for sub ohm.
SS mesh is going to give you a different flavor than other wicking materials and can be harsher. You might try lowering your nic level.
The top and bottom coil is where I always had the hot spots. For the bottom coil, be sure it isn't touching the deck if you have a metal deck and the top coil should not be touching the post but not too far away either.

These problems are why I gave up on Genesis.
