Sounds like a hot spot or a short. What did you do to oxidize the wick? Did you burn some juice on the wick before you put it in the coil? Some people say that is an optional step, but it really does help.

Try taking out the mesh and fire the coil. Get the resistance without the mesh. When you put it back in, see if the resistance is the same. Most of the work with SS mesh is working out the hotspots, not building the coil itself. Push the wraps around until the coil glows evenly and starts with the middle coils.

My thought would be, Have you ever used Kanthal before? Some people get a metal taste from it.

What type of wick did you make? I've only made tubes and have not had a problem with an air bubble feeding down through the tube as the liquid capillaries up even when vaped in an upright position. If you made a solid wick try opening up your fill hole, air has to get in somehow.
How thick is the liquid? What is the mesh?
