I find that my cotton wicks get nasty tasting after a couple refills. I was changing them daily and was curious to try silica wicks. I've been mostly using AO wicks and thought I'd give them a break also. Mostly because I need to cut some more from my bricks I got on ebay.
Hi ricks, why? why are you tired of the cotton wicks? well, i'm curious to know because i just setup my Fogger V2 RBA with cotton wick and it seems to be working just awesome!

I build micro coils and a bedding of silica wick. Cotton as a weird taste to me.
I had the same problem with cotton wicks but someone gave me a wonderful tip! Boil the cotton in water 3 times, 10 minutes boiling per cycle. Change water after each boiling cycle. Dry out the cotton or just leave it anywhere for a day or two to dry it out. I take a big piece of cotton and boil it in a big pan 10 minutes and 3 cycles of boiling. ZERO bad taste! Its wicking like a beast! The best part is, no flooding, no gurgling, no dry hits, simply a.w.e.s.o.m.e! :)

I haven't yet experienced any burning problem but its just my second day of vaping on boiled cotton. Silica wicks are nice but the same problem with them, they burn out pretty quickly. If you are using a bottom coil RBA with a tank (for eg., Fogger V2), it is going to be a pain in the rear. You will have to clean the wick everyday. And to clean a RBA like Fogger V2, you have to take each and every part out wasting a good amount of eLiquid.

Silica wicks gunk up really quick if you use 100% VG (or higher VG ratio) juice. I can't comment on the results if you use higher ratio PG liquids. It may not burn out too soon.

I'm actually interested about Ceramic Rope, it can take very high temperatures (1100 deg F), I guess it wont burn that soon. Ricks, if you are tired of changing burnt wicks and coils, I recommend you to check Ceramic Ropes. We're discussing about them in another thread here.

Ever try micro coils with silica in an RBA?

This is my single coil dragon coil build with a bedding of silica

I got over the cotton as well, got tired of it getting nasty then having to pull more throught etc .

dont know how a silica wick isnt lasting, with a quick dry burn once in a while and then a nice rinse I get a couple weeks sometimes. after trying several types i found some thats pretty tasteless. i think its much easier in the end cut a new piece wrap it install, done for a while.

I got to the boiling today... and I must say it is much better.. Thanks..

About cotton wicks, when you boil cotton and use it as a wick, the best vaping so far! On my VG liquids, cotton works the best but be ready to change the wick every couple of days.

I'm now inclined towards trying ceramic rope for wicking, lets see when I get a chance to order some :)

I'm liking the Silica so far. Where do you get your Silica?

I dusted off the ekowool last night after using cotton and micro coils for awhile and tried something new (to me anyways) in the AGI.
Took out the neg. screw on the deck and used it for a wick hole. 2mm threaded fits perfectly into the wick holes, 2 tails into the tank and coiled using the dripper posts. Fill hole stays open which is nice also.
It has been awhile since I've used the ekowool but I have to say that I'm enjoying it so far, and I'm also looking forward to giving my NETs a little more love now that I can dry burn without rewicking. Check it our ricks- not a great pic but you get the idea:

minimalsaint, have you tried the ss wicks? i see you have a top coil RDA/RBA .. For the life of me, I can't get enough wicking out of my ss wicks on my i-Atty or on AGA T2s .. ss wicks just don't wick enough juice and keep giving burnt taste.

I'm nearly sick of ss mesh wicks lol .. For now, I'm just using my i-Atty/AGA T2s like a dripper. Pop the juice in from top and enjoy for 5 minutes, again do the same .. I don't understand what should I do to get my SS wick work properly ..

I gave up on SS wicks a long time ago- couldn't stand the fiddling to get them working and the taste was never that great for me when I could get one going. As for wicking, there are a lot of different factors... What pg/vg is your liquid? Solid or hollow wick? Fill screw in or out? Do you hold the device more vertical or horizontal? What resistance are your builds? Are you wrapping directly onto the coil or using something like the drill bit method?
I love the ekowool and cotton for simplicity when wrapping coils and wicking has never been a problem with either in the genesis as long as the fill hole is open. I'm also not a fan of the SS dry hit (welding fumes, anyone?) whereas silica or cotton will give a "warning taste" before running dry.
I have also used ceramic, but never the AO wick like those that ricks makes-
Ceramic was great but finicky as well (coils need to be tight on the surface and need some break in time) but I liked them a lot and have been thinking I need to get a bubble stone and make some. Wicking was great, flavor was awesome, but the price was unjustifiable and don't sneeze or the damned thing will snap like a cheeto. Maybe AO is a bit more sturdy, ricks?
