Good for you! :) any rda will need an open 510-510 adapter so that it clears the "well"

And the rda is what keeps the outer casing on at that point, not the cone.
My go to rba is the RM2 ( reomizer) real easy to build on, nice ceramic drip well so it's next to impossible to short, and it's already bottom fed. Robert over at reosmods also has an igo s he has modded for bottom feeding for a little cheaper- I think that would probably look even better on it. I didn't get into rebuildables until I got my reo- there our many more qualified VModders who should be along shortly to give you the down and dirty on rda's for the vmod :)

Neither the RM2 or Igo-S will work for the Vmod XL. You need at least a 16+mm base to keep the body in place on the Vmod. I modded mine with an Igo-L and it worked for a while before it gave up the ghost. My 510 connector separated and the device shorted out and collapsed the spring. I have been trying to figure out how to get it working again, but feel it is beyond my capabilities... I think I just need to send it back to Vapage and see if they can get it going for me.

So the milled RM2 will hold the shell on the chassis without a washer of some sort? From your pic, it looks like the base is sticking down through the shell... I inquired about using one several months ago and was told the base diameter was too small to hold the shell in place.

The unmilled totally. And the milled is only milled to a certain part. I actually have one milled for a woodvil that's milled less. I think what really matters is the length of your 510 to 510 adapter. Both will catch on the top of the shell, it just depends on the depth you require.
Basically, if it's a shorter adapter, the milled would be perfect. A little longer, than a woodvil milled would probably be best. If it puts the connector almost level, as if there was no well? You'd want an unmilled or "low profile" rm2

Only a portion of the base is milled. The milled portion would slide right into the "well" of the chassis, while the unmilled portion of the base would catch and hold the shell. I would still use a noting like I have in the demonstration pic so as not to ruin the finish. And like I said, which type you'd need would entirely depend on the length or your adapter.

Personally? I'd go unmilled and try for an almost flush adapter, but that's me. Don't want my adapter getting stuck inside there

Do you have a pic of the XL with the milled RM2 attached? Not just the shell, complete with the chassis assembled? Last I knew the only way to attach any RDA to the XL needed a 510/510 adaptor because the 510 connection on all RDA's isn't long enough to go down into the connector in the chassis. As I mentioned before, I was going to put am RM2 on my XL and couldn't because it was milled and wasn't big enough to capture the shell and keep it on the device without further modding. There was a pretty large gap between the shell and the base at the milled part of it. This was confirmed by Eddie Adams in the XL Rda thread...

Not worried about anything... I think you may be confused here. I was merely pointing out to the OP that the RM2, (milled version), wouldn't work on the XL as it was not wide enough at the base to hold the shell onto the chassis without further modding it, (as in an extra washer or something)... I inquired about the RM2 and Eddie Adams set me straight that it didn't have a wide enough base to capture the shell without further modding. My XL has been down now for about 4 months and counting... I used the Igo-L on mine till it went down. I have since moved on to a few other setups and put fixing mine on the back burner... Again, not worried about anything...
