Rda igo-l advice on black wicks

Im using 3mm silica. I wrapped two loops on each wick so, dual coil dual wick at .3 ohms with 28g kanthal. Two 1/16 air holes. Using this on a smoktech natural telescope mod.
Is it normal for the area around the coils to be a dark color? It's all around the coils and through the wicks.
I'm not sure if I did something wrong or if this is a normal occurrence. If it is normal, is there anything I should do for maintanence in order to get optimal duration out of my wick and wire?

The darkness is either burned juice/wick or the left over stuff from vaporized juices. Some juice, usually the darker juices leave stuff behind even when they're vaporized properly. If the flavor you are getting is still normal then I would think what you are seeing is simply this residue.

If the flavor is still normal, you should be good to keep going.

If you are really trying to save wick/wire, you can dry fire your device (don't add anymore juice) until your juice is gone, this can clean the wick/wire. You can also rewick the coil if your coil isn't too tight. Looking up videos from reputable people of youtube would be your best bet for learning to do either.

What kind of juice are you vaping?
Some of my darker thicker juices, like bobas bounty for example, will turn my wick really dark after a short period.

Thanks for the replies. I am vaping Heathers heavenly waffles. Does how dark the juice is determine the lifespan of a wick and coil with RDA"s?

waffle will def turn dark, im sure it has lots of sugars in it.

usually every other day I will rinse the wick with water real good kinda dry the ends a bit with a papertowel then dryburn it real quick till the gunk falls off when blowing on it. refill and vape. depending on what wick im using at the time i can get around 2 weeks before the wick just looks beat up and frayed.

the darkness/sugar of the juice wont determine the lifespan but it will lead to more frequent cleanings which will directly affect how long the wick lasts.

Hmmm... You're running a bit hot, don't you think??? .3 ohms is completely unnecessary; you will burn most any juice in no time

I agree with this. I'm seeing a few threads lately about folks running coils around .3 ohms, which isn't even safe without super high drain batteries (more than 10 amps).

Try 4 or 5 wraps per coil, it will still be SLR but a lot easier on juice, batteries, and wicking. Maybe even 6 wraps each.

Thank you so much for this thread. I have an igo-l and was having this problem and not knowing why or what it was... I also was just recoiling it everytime it got too gunked up.. going through wire and silica.. this time i just dry burned it while blowing on it allot, to get out all the leftover juice (this step didnt really clean anything so if you stop here dont expect results), i turned on my foset to the warmest setting and let it heat up real good and put my igo-l under it, sideways, without the mod attached ofcourse.. i left it under the water for a bit while rubbing on the coils gently with my fingers (it couldnt hurt to leave it on there as long as you want... the silica gets fully absorbed with water within the first second..), then I dried it off with paper towels best i could, wiping off some more black resin on the way, then i took a blow dryer and dried it out the rest of the way to get more h2o out.. stuck it back on my titan and started dry burning it while blowing.. after the crackling stops you know theres not much water left, so you can stop blowing on it and just burst fire it to where the coils get red, keep burst firing and dont be afraid to really pump that ....... until you see your silica turning back to original color... I did this allot and it looked like a nearly new coil assembly!! next i took a sharp knife and scraped off the last remaining bit of black on the coil, now the coil looks more grey than anything... I hope thats not oxidation from me applying h2o then overheating.. but i just dripped up some kel pop from vixen vapors, and the FLAVOR IS BACK! this puppy is tasting better than it did when i first coiled it! (i dont torch my silica, waiting on my blazer big shot gt8000 to ship..)
