Step 1: Take jewelry and watchmaking classes 30 years ago and work as a jeweler for 30 years so you have a lot of exerience bending springy wire
This is like asking someone how to walk. I'll try to explain it.
Step 1: Anneal the wire. Get it red hot with a torch and let it cool down naturally (don't blow on it or quench it, if it's cold air remove the torch slowly so it cools down slowly).
Step 2: Pull the wire between your fingers pinching it to smooth out any lumps or kinks.
Step 3: Wrap it on a guage needle slightly smaller than the guage of wrap you desire. (Very slightly, it shouldn't spring open that much.)
Step 4: Here's the tricky part, and you can see some of it in that picture.
Getting the legs started in line with the rest of the coil.
I've held these with a fingernail. It's a little counterintuitive because you want something in opposition to hold the start but that makes you angle off because the fingers are in the way. The opposition needs to be at the other end of the needle. Good tweezers also work.
I've gone with short legs, let it have gaps and then pull the leg (unwrapping the coil) to the length I want. This is the easiest way.
I also have a way were I take my itty bitty saw and cut some grooves in the metal crimp on a hypodermic needle to hold the wire. So far it is working great, slide the wire in and start spinning the needle. But most people don't have saw blades this small at their disposal.
Step 5: You don't want to feed the wire at an angle to the side where the coil isn't (like ^). You either want it going straight onto the needle or at a slight angle to the side where the coil is. Pull it tight while you wrap and it will slide into place.
So your wraps on the needle are /////// but the wire going on the needle is either | or \.
I'll see if I can make a video (or how long of a video it would be if I made one).
