I spent all afternoon trying to build new coil for my Aerotank . I'm using 28 gauge kanthol. It keeps showing a short though. I've tried smaller coils larger coils shorter coils longer coils all to no avail. So after all this I wonder if it's even worth it. I've probably wasted more in Kanthol than it would've cost to buy replacement atomizers.

Post some pictures of a the process as your doing it maybe there is something we can see that's wrong
That would require starting over again which isn't possible tonight.
After you secure the wire ends with the rubber grommet and the center pin, make sure you clip the wire ends extremely close to the grommet. A millimeter too long and that stray bit of wire can short to the connector once the head is installed.
Yes, it has to be in middle (center) and not touching any walls.
