Tucson, it's a dry heat
I'm reading that some people use cotton or hemp string for their wicks. If you use these alternative materials - what size thread? Do you soak it? Do you use the same material for the second set of wicks ("flavor wicks") on the top of the coil?

What is the benefit of cotton vs. silica?

Can you tell I'm interested in this too? LOL

Here's the video I'm using as a guide for my EVODs (which they say are the same style of head as the Protank.)

Kanger EVOD Bottom Coil Atomizer Rebuild HD Close Up - YouTube

I love how clear the picture is on his video - especially close up.

MsComptrtchr, I usually avoid laying the "flavor wicks" over the top of the coils. I find that configuration to actually mute the flavors and taste nasty. I know that many of the folks who use cotton material for their wicks will boil the cotton wicks for ten minutes and let them dry completely (several days) before they use the wick in their head builds. I haven't messed with cotton or hemp wicks yet, unfortunately. Hopefully someone will chime in that goes that route. Some of the folks that do the cotton wick thing, say it is a superior vape, but easier to burn the wick.

But if you don't put in the flavor wicks, don't you have problems with leaking??

If you use the 2mm wicks, you really don't have a problem with leaking as they are slightly larger than the factory wick material. I have had the 1.5mm wicks leak a little on me, but I think it was because I trimmed that wick a bit too short. I'm still playing with the 1.5mm wick material.

I use 32 AWG Kanthal wire and 2mm silica wick to rebuild mine. Check out LET'S REBUILD A KANGER PROTANK 2013 - YouTube to see how it's done. :)

Not the best video to give someone for showing them how to recoil the pro tank.

He makes a ton of mistakes, there was another thread about it yesterday.

If you want to find a video on youtube of someone building a coil, search for a tutorial instead, maybe someone can post some links in here.....but Grimm straight out explains he has never done it before, it was his first time, and he did a rather shoddy job, lol.

Boil a few feet for 25-30 minutes allow to dry overnight and when wrapping I triple it with no flavor wicks without any leaking issues. Be sure to remove the post and apply 2-3 drops on wick/coil to prime it as without being wet cotton will burn unlike silica so no dry burning!

The thing to remember when rebuilding these heads is when you install the center tube and before you put on the silicone cap check to see if you can see a little black where the cap meets the coil chamber. It needs the tiniest bit of space to wick properly. So if you rebuild and start vapping and you get the dreaded dry/burnt taste just remove a few strands and it should work good. I use 2mm for coil and 1mm on top tho I only use one piece of the 1mm and it works great. For my coils I've been using some pre made wires I got for my Ithaka from Stormy's Vape Cellar. I have used regular Kanathal 28 and 30 gage repsectively 3-5 wraps. I also made me a few micro coils and they also worked with a cotten wick I made with a roll of sterile cotten I picked up from CVS.
