When it comes to rebuilding vivi nova heads or any atty for that matter, what determines the resistance. For example if I rebuild a 1.8 ohm atty will it still be 1.8 when I am finished or a higher res.

Depends on what gauge and resistance the wire is. I've been rebuilding all my vivis (stardust, mini, tank) with Kanthal A-1 32 awg with 4-5 wraps for 1.8-2.1 ohms. You'll notice that the original coil is much smaller (34-36 awg). 32awg is a bit thicker and I find it easier to work with. It's hard to get it exactly the same each time, which is why I finally caved and bought a variable voltage power supply. Be sure to read the docs in the forum carefully. It's easy to get a short circuit and that can be dangerous.
Here's a tip: find a machine thread screw and use the grooves to wind the wire. makes perfect coils every time. Mine are 2.1mm inside diameter, but I'm using Cotton square candle wicking so that size works best for me. Good luck!

Doh! Have a look at this vid: PBusardo explains in detail how to rebuild the vivi. Doesn't really matter which you have: the coil portion is the same. Also a note: there are two silicon sleeves, not just one. Many people get a gurgling and they think the vivi sucks, when in fact the little silicon top sleeve is pushed back into the mouthpiece :)

Have a look on amazon. Basically you want "unprimed", bleached. There was quite a discussion on safety and bleach vs. unbleached. The general consensus was that bleached was no more dangerous than unbleached (the processing that cotton goes through is extensive, bleached or not). Also unbleached takes longer to break in, and it has an earthy taste. Either way you'll want to boil it to remove sizing, and anything else that may be in it. Make sure it's 100% cotton; nothing with a zinc core, etc. I find the best size to be #1/0 (not #1). This is what I purchased: Amazon.com: Cotton Square Braid Candle Wick - #1/0: Arts, Crafts & Sewing
Oh, and make sure you don't wind the coil too tight. Unlike silica, the cotton swells some and you'll cut off the juice flow and that's no good :) It's not necessary to use a screw to make your coils, but the right size will make it fit well on the braid. I heat the coil with a lighter since you can't dry burn cotton. It can be tedious to get the wick through the coil; I wet the end (like you would to thread a needle) and then twist it gently like you would a nut on a bolt. Once past the end you can slide the coil fairly easily. You'll need to pull out the coil some so the winds aren't too close. Again, you don't have to use a screw. Some people wrap the wick while holding a needle. I find this more difficult.

Also my signature has a link to other cotton wicks and info about it. I didn't do all this, I just read the 3700+ post in " http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/modding-forum/284030-wick-materials-safe-vs-dangerous.html ". If you have a WEEK to read it ;)

I warp my coils around a screwdriver (2mm in diameter), 5 coils of kanthal a1 I get 2.1/2.2 ohms and with 6 coils I get 2.4/2.5 ohms. Fairly consistent. As for the cotton wick, I would recommend using cotton batten instead of the square braided candle wick (need to unbraid to reduce flooding and dry hits). Just take a pinch and roll it into a wick and slide it into the coil and you're good to go. Keep in mind the cotton expands significantly after absorbing the eliquid, so don't use too much or it will lead to pinching of the wick resulting in dry hits (~1.5mm in diameter).

Batten is nice; gives it pillowy vapes nice N smooth. It just didn't hold up long for me. I've never unbraided the wick; never had to, but I've never put that many wraps so closely together.
