Many of us DIY our own e-liquids/juice. Nothing dangerous about it.

I highly recommend you visit your local vape shop and taste test their juice. Most have "flavor bars" where the juice they sell is loaded up in clearomizers.

All shops as well as online sites carry juice in many different levels of nicotine. 0/3/6/12 and maybe 18 are common.

Bought some 6mg and 0mg liquids to test with today. 6mg was quite harsh on my throat still but the home made 3mg my friends friend made is perfect.
If you have the same flavor in both 0mc & 6mg try adding equal amounts of each to get 3mg. If that still tastes harsh could be the flavors you bought are higher PG or the nicotine base used by the vendor is harsher than your friend uses. Cheap nicotine base sometimes has a "peppery" taste. Or it could be the juice flavor you bought. Some flavors give more throat hit than others (i.e. menthol or cinnamon to name two).
How do you flavour them after mixing the PG/VG? Literally use food flavourings?

No, food flavorings that you find in grocery stores are not concentrated enough and may contain oil and other things that are not safe to inhale.

For all things DIY head on over to the DIY ELiquid Forum. There's a bit more to DIY than adding flavoring and steeping. There are many additives and flavor combinations that will enhance a mix. Things like creams, custards, caramels, marshmallow and graham cracker are very common components in a lot of recipes. These are good to have on hand, especially when you start to get confident and want more complexity in your flavors.

A little research goes a long way in perfecting a mix. Below is the information I often give to members new to DIY.
Here are some threads you may like to read through for different flavoring companies. Many of the posts include recipes and comments about a specific flavor.
