Can I ask a personal question want to quit? How do you go from Germany to Atlanta? What's the biggest difference for you?

I went to my first class to university in Germany and had to stay in the door because the class was 30% overfilled with people studying the same thing I was. I could not even hear the professor talking due to all the people. Figured I rather pay for a good education and go to the states since my dad had a company here in Atlanta I figured it would be cheaper to live in Atlanta then lets say NY or other places.

Differences between Germany and Atlanta (Cant judge whole usa on the following) In Germany handicapped spots are for handicapped people whereas here 80% of the people on handicapped spots are just way overweight. Not judging just saying can't be a coincidence. People are more friendly here then in Germany, weather is way better since I am from the north of Germany where the summers are meh not that long. They let kids drive here with 16 which is crazy but understandable due to the long distances you have to travel here. The house I live in is HUGEEE and was aprox $400k I would have to pay 5 times as much in Germany for the same house.
First time I came to Atlanta I got lost everywhere because every street corner looks the same gas station, mc donalds, wendys, waffle house in Germany we only have mc donalds and maybe a burger king thats about it.
Space is another thing drive 6 hrs around texas and you would be still in texas whereas in germany if you drive 6 hrs you end up in paris france. I love the fact that I just have to drive 6 hrs from here to be in Florida I love the laid back mentality here I love the fact that the people love their country and mostly all have a big American flag at their house which no one in whole Germany has. And if someone in Germany has a german flag anywhere they would be marked as "nazis". Sad fact germans are not proud to be germans. Yes we have had a bad history, however I was born 1984 and had nothing to do with the hitler times but my country gives me the feeling that I have no right to be proud of my country which is more then upsetting because Germany is a great country and I am proud to be from there.

All in all if I sum it up I prefer it here in the states due to the people and the lower taxes including the size of the country + I love moonshine lool.

Keep in mind everything I said is based on Georgia I have been to cali, NY, Chicago, Colorado and all of those are way way different.

Awww want to quit that was very educational thank you for sharing that. We have 2 German exchange girls here. And so far they love it except for the food and drink. One of them only ate slaw the first week she was here at school. She said they only like fresh fruits, vegatables steamed (not fried like we do them), only water, they don't like anything with sugar. They say they just aren't used to all the different tastes here. Any advice on how we can make them feel more welcome or help them feel at home here?

Plus you can meet up with Red and me in Florida to try the punch.

I would go with the make it or break it mentality my first 2 weeks have been somewhat hard due to the things you just mentioned everything is super sweet and fried but after 2 weeks you just love every bit about it. If they really still have so many issues may as well go to your local "wholes food" they carry tons of German products but they are super expensive. A bottle of good sparkling water for example is something like $2 a bottle which is crazy.

What I did in the beginning was in the morning I went to publix and got me a simple sandwich with only butter and some cheese or cheese and ham for lunch to avoid all the fast food and got me 2 bottles of water with it. If you or the hosting family want to go the extra mile just get some pork (Schnitzel(They know what schnitzel is)) at your local piggly wiggly or publix or kroger with some veggies and put the pork in the pan without anything and steem the veggies and they are in heaven but as said give them 2 weeks to get used to their new surroundings and they will be fine we talk about America here everyone has to love this country.

Its really a bit scary when I first came here I almost puked after eating my first chicken biscuit and now its the best thing in the world to me. When I first saw fried green tomatoes I said the usual "There is just one place in the world that would even fry a freaking tomato" and now there is nothing better then a good BBQ with some green fried tomatoes. I just love this country too much after 5 years of living here I really love every single bit about it except some laws, and some gun laws but thats just not going to be changed.

Edit: I am down for Florida but can't do the punch it just scream for a headache the next morning lol

Thanks for the advice. We let them be cheerleaders, went in together and bought them their outfits. And your right we do fry some weird stuff here. Like have you tried the fried oreos or fried butterfingers yet. LOL Like they didn't already have enough calories but they are good. Best thing is owning a 140,000.00 dollar house which would cost like a million in NY and pay only 264.00 a year in property taxes.

My cousin bought her a car here for 16,000.00 used and paid 300.00 for her tax, title and tags. Moved to California and had to pay them over $4000.00 for the car. LOL

The laws do suck, I still live in a dry county. LOL

Well I won't be drinking it. Been there, regretted that. I'm playing hostess. LOL

Ok sorry but even after 5 years that is just crazy crazy I say. I already heard some people say "you have to try fried butter its so good" are they insane?? The fried oreos could work I admit it but fried butter?????

The laws do suck, I still live in a dry county. LOL

That's exactly one of the laws I was thinking about. I could list at least 20 laws that make no sense to me but that would be off topic. lol

Where did (or do) you go to school in Atlanta? My youngest is at Georgia Tech.

oh one of the best schools if not the best in GA. I took 2 semesters at GA Tech but had to transfer to Ga State and Kennesaw State. Being out of state (even though I pay taxes here which is way unfair) I had to pay over $26k a semester at Ga Tech so I figured I get most of my classes done at Ga State since Ga Tech is not really a business school anyways. After 2 years I joined some groups at Kennesaw State and got a job there so I ended up graduating at KSU.

I have tons of friends at Ga Tech and it is by far one of THE best schools to go to if your field is technology or engineering related which for me wasn't right but nevertheless your kid can be glad to have such nice parents that give her/him the opportunity to attempt a institution such as GA Tech.

Edit: I know $26k is somewhat usual for an American education nevertheless I had to pay for my entire education by myself. With a student visa I had no right to work here except on a $8 an hr job on campus so try to make $26k a semester with $8 an hr it just doesnt work out. At KSU I paid roughly $10k and found some ways to make money with poker to pay my tuition. Now I graduated and finally got my work permission and got a internship with Porsche. Unpaid internship which sucks but oh well it will look great on my resume.

He is in grad school for computer science. I paid for undergrad - which is why he went in-state! He's on his own for grad school - but hopefully it will pay off in the long run.
An unpaid internship is still time well spent. I'm sure it will pay off for you in the long run. I'm glad your time in the US has been good for you.

PS to Red - Get over it!
