i just bought a sigelei 100w box. the thing is a beast and i love it. anyway i'm looking to produce maximum cloudage and am new to the world of regulated devices. i know you do not need the low ohm coils i used to build on my mech and it's a totally different ball game. as far as i've found so far the name of the game is surface area.

since i'll be pushing 100w no matter the resistance my goal would be to maximize surface area. i think there's more to it than just that though. what kind of resistance would be most efficient? if i ohms law calculate 100w at 8.5 volts which is the voltage it runs at if you have it set to 100w the ohms law calculator says a resistance of 0.7Ω so does that mean a 0.7Ω coil is the most efficient to be running at?

i know i'm probably not understanding this fully so please explain

Hey Boxed! At 8.5 volts you'd be drawing 11.7 amps for exactly 100 watts. Power = Current times Voltage. And Current is also Voltage/Resistance. So 8.5v/0.7Ω = 12.14 amps. And 12.14 times 8.5 = 103.1 watts. So you are real close at 0.7Ω (just a wee bit over). Usually with any type of power supply, it has a "Rated Maximum Power" it can supply without damaging it. And 103 watts probably won't hurt a supply rated at 100 watts using a few seconds at a time.
You simply don't want to exceed its maximum ability to supply power (Current times Voltage) for any length of time. So the best to me seems like it would be what gets you close to 100 WITHOUT going over it by more than 2 or 3 watts (if that is its true maximum rated ability). If you can vary the voltage, I would set the voltage it so that it get up to 100 watts consumed, but not very much higher (like I said 2 or 3 won't kill it for short bursts).
Sounds like a really neat unit! I'm new to vaping but very old to electronics engineering (grin). I want to get into some of BIG stuff like you are talking about, when I get the time to investigate the details a bit more.
Enjoy it!!
Rick

Something else I should have added is, that if you can't change the voltage by 10ths of a volt (say down to 8.4), slightly varying the resistance has the same effect. The lower your resistance, the more the current will flow and the more power (watts) you use. Or, increasing it a tiny bit would bring the current down a bit and the power down to 100 from 103 watts. So you could make it exactly 100 by increasing the resistance just a tiny bit to 0.72 to 0.73 ohms (or so), and that would be right at 100 watts for exactly 8.5 volts.
I hope that helps you some!
Enjoy,
Rick

thanks for the response rick! well the thing with these regulated mods is that there is a chip inside that controls how much power is being outputted. the device is supposed to be safe to go down to 0.3Ω in fact. the 100w comes from the fact that that is the highest power the chip will allow to be emitted. i'm just trying to figure out if any particular resistance will allow me to have the best performance (ie the biggest clouds).

edit: it has 2 batteries rated safe to 30 amps continuous that i believe are in series so i have some headroom when it comes to amp draw

It just means that a 0.7ohm coil is the lowest coil that it can fire the most volts at. after that its limits come into play. Is that the most "efficient" no.. because it depends on how you define "efficient". Do you mean the biggest clouds? Because if you do, there is more than just the raw wattage at play to making huge clouds.

When I build now, I build for the ability to have a damn fine vape on any mod I slap it on. So for me, I target 0.4 ohms for most all tank systems I have. That way, on a mech still getting to the 40's, but on a regulated, can push it up to max output, for that intense vape, vaping. :D

What I love about high amp regulated, can push a nice safe build to very high watts and not stress ones batts. Fraking love it. Though, must say, There's something about the simplicity and elegance of a mech. Got charge, got juice, one always has vape. :D

Right now I'm vaping my Sig 100 watt with a .3 ohm dual coil setup in the 454 Big Block at 60 watts 4.4 volts and it's putting out some nice clouds. I'd say the best clouds I had with it was with the 454 with a .6 ohm dual coil at about 75 watts. I don't like running all the way at 100 watts because you lose a lot of the flavor.

Check out this tool. It's supposed to show you the sweet spot for your mod.Mod range | Steam Engine | free vaping calculators
