Regulated mods have a circuit board with electronics on it to regulate the wattage and or voltage that is sent to the tank or RDA (dripping atomizer). They usually have some protection against short circuits and over draining of the battery.

Non regulated send whatever voltage the battery has available. The voltage will decrease as the battery charge is drained.

Bottom line, regulated mods offer a consistent vape puff to puff and dialed in where you like it. Most reg mods also have built in protections for safety. A mechanical mod does not have any of this. Advantage of mech mods is they are smaller (don't need room for a chipset) and there is far less things that can break on them.

Also, unregulated mods require a bit more knowledge to be able to use safely since they don't have any of the circuitry. On a regulated mod it just won't fire if the coil is outside the specs for what the mod can handle. With a mech (unregulated) mod, the results of an improper build can be disastrous, so you need to know how to avoid such issues.

And because of this, beginners should start out with a regulated mod first or do a lot of studying up on mechs before diving in as Kad alludes. It's a safety concern! Mechs became popular with the advent of subohming. Back then, regulated mods could not handle the amp draws required to subohm. That has all changed and now regulated mods can pretty much do anything that a mech can do and more as it pertains to subohming.

Mechs used to be the cloud chasers de-facto for sub-Ohming, they are basically a shell with a battery and a on and off switch. If you don't use a proper coil or battery, or do any bad mistake, they can be dangerous. The stories about e-cigarettes blowing, are almost always mech mods that shorted the battery.

Regulated mods have circuits, over small computer boards that controls the power, wattage, etc. and unless a fault, are very safe. Thanks to advances in the technology, most newer reg. mods can do everything a mech can do. Size wise, many are not much bigger than the mech mods now.

A good reg. mod with temp. control and sub-ohm capacity can be a wonderful device.

More and more mech mods users are switching now, while most mech mods users that stick with it just do it because they feel that they have "more manual control" over the way it's built, but they also tend to be people that consider it a very serious hobby and enjoy it, including (and mostly) the building of their coils and such.
