Its all depends on how thick your juice is, if its real thin it will leak without the rubber if its 100% vg I take it out to prevent dry hits.

+ 1 I haven't had abit of problems with taking it off mine, actually had problems(dry hits) with it on. With it off juice is able to move more freely into the wick but like Daytona said if thin juice it can cause leakage. I fixed the leakage on mine by adding a second oring to the addy before screwing in the base. Worse case scenario if you want to try it if you get some leakage, put the seal back, clean up the leakage and vape away. Just make sure if/when anytime you have leaks to clean out the firing pin area on your device
Removing the seal and boring a 1/16 drill bit in an existing air hole made mine hit like a champ. I'll kinda pulse my finger on and off the hole for the duration of the hit. This method does suck the juice somewhat tho but IMO is well worth the flavor and vapor. Next week I will be adding micro coils(first time building a coil) and cotton to see if I can get even better vape. I like to tinker somewhat
Lol having said all that I'm not saying to go drill holes and what not in your atty. just sharing something I done that gave me great results.
