I really hope this is an OK place to post this, I'm not getting the feeling like there is a good "general" place to ask this so here we go....

I'm new to the market of e-cigs and of course very overwhelmed and confused. I am looking for a "get my feet wet" e-cig that will get me off to a reasonable start:

Requirements:
1. Takes loose relatively large format li-ion cells, (minimum 14500 size. I have dozens of protected AW cells and about a dozen Molicel Emoli IMR18650s, so anything from 14500-18650 size would be great. Is there a modular system out there with different batter tubes for different size cells? Modular would be preferred)
2. Manual switch function (also known as "manual battery" but that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, it's a manual switch, not a manual battery, a manually battery would look like an exercise bike strapped to a generator, or a hand crank on the side of the e-cig).
3. Separate "atomizer." (heating element. Atomization occurs when a liquid is forced through a nozzle at high pressure. Am I missing something here?)
4. Cartridge that takes liquid refilling (no pre-loaded cartridges).
5. No charger and no built in charging required. Also no included batteries needed. I will handle charging in chargers I can trust to do it safely and properly.
6. Would prefer to buy something that is part of a regular and modular production line, but am open to a custom if it is well supported and takes standardized heating elements and such.
7. Would like to keep the price under $100, (remember, no batteries or chargers are needed), but could go a little higher if necessary.

Any recommendations would be very much appreciated.

Thank You,
Eric

Going off the battery size you have listed I would suggest to look at the Altsmoke BB unit for a 14500 and the Silver Bullet or Omega for the 18650 battery. These would be the first choices I would suggest to someone. For the 14500 I would aslo say look at the Provape-1, a very nice unit with some great safety features built in.

You can also view this website to see a larger selection of units to fit you battery requirements.

Your list of wants takes you out of anything commonly recommended as a feet-wetting starter. You've essentially specified a battery mod, and the site that Jimi Mack linked is a great place to window-shop.

Bear in mind that few to none of the sort of things you're looking for come as "starter kits," which means you'll have to order atomizers, cartridges (if that's what you really want) and liquid separately.

The Silver bullet was one of the units that I found on a few sites that I am interested in. The price point is about right. I may end up going that route but get the feeling like there must me something out there I am missing.

Oh... I forgot, I also have a handful of 16340 (RCR123) size (both protected LiCo and AW IMR16340s). I could use those but it's been in my experience that 14500 size cells have more actual capacity (regardless of label ratings).

The lack of "starter kits" is perfectly fine by me. I'd rather not waste money on batteries and chargers that I don't need. I'm a fan of decent quality and modularity. I'm looking at that link posted by Jimi right now.

Props to mdocod jumping right in. You don't screw around, do you? ;)

:) nah, The water feels pretty nice... It's just a side-step from my flashlight hobby in many respects. I just can't decide what to order. Debating between a 14500 or 18650 powered unit. (size vs runtime at this point in time). I think I only have a single flat top protected 14500 floating around, but literally dozens of 17670s and 18650s that would work in the 18650 unit so maybe I should start there. Once I get a feel for how these things are put together I could always make myself a 14500 body on the mill out in the garage anyways.

LOL....I KNEW you were a flashlight guy from the start.
Don't worry, the better quality "e-cig" industry pretty much revolves around the same support hardware as the flashlights.

Then you should consider the Silver Bullet, to me it looks like a small flash light body, takes 18650 protected batteries, you don't have to buy batteries or charger but there's a menu to choose attys, carts, ect. when you order it. As mentioned before you can get it at altsmoke.com but you know that.
