i see posts all the time that contain big, glorious pictures.... whenever i try to post a picture, its so tiny you almost need a magnifying glass to read. is there some code used to determine the size of the displayed picture?

The ones you see that are larger are linked from sites like imgur.com. ECF resizes images stored on the servers to help conserve space.
