Hi all. I'm trying to rewick a Kanger OCC horizontal .5 ohm coil head and can't get it right.

I watched a couple videos that said to use a 5mm to 7mm wide piece of cotton. I started with about 5mm. I got it in, worked it back and forth a few times and trimmed it off. I primed it up and it didn't wick worth a darn at 15 watts. I got a dry hit almost immediately.

I took that out and tried 3mm and now about 1.5mm and still can't get it to wick over 11 watts.

Am I going the wrong way? Do I need more cotton?

The cotton I have is organic Japanese from 101vape.

You have the V1 deck? It's actually pretty easy to wick, and those small holes will pull juice with no problem. Fan your tails and don't stuff them in the wells by the holes - just tuck them in there loosely and it will wick fine. I've run 80% VG juice through it with no problems.
Cool, thanks! I'm guessing you're using cotton? How wide of a strip? I'll give it a shot and see what I can do.

+1 on the ST v1 holes being good enough.

I tried the OCC coils and to me it seems like the airflow was a little restricted as compared to the rebuildable deck.

As for wicking I use Rayon and stuff the coil fairly tight and thin the tails out so they rest on the deck bottom. Cotton would be the same way, but don't really stuff the coil. What you want is the wick to totally touch the coil in all spots as possible because if it doesn't you will get a dry hit from the coil part that is not being actively cooled by juice.

Wish I could say you need x mm of wick, but it takes a little trial and error. Once you get it down you won't worry about measuring as you can just "see" that you are good to go.

Be sure to prime your newly installed wick with juice before screwing everything together. Also look for occasional bubbles as that tells you that there is juice flowing into the atty chamber.

Parting advice, don't cover the juice ports as it may obstruct flow. Next to the ports is perfect. I use a toothpick to fan the wick away from the ports once I have the barrel ring installed and have not had any issues to date with the ST.

Yes, plain cotton. For my 2.5mm coils, I cut a strip maybe ~1/4" wide parallel to the grain, peel the outer layers off, stretch it slightly across the grain and roll. In the coil, it should be snug but not tight. Fan the tails so they're fluffy. On the v1 deck, I tuck the tails up then put the outer RTA ring on the deck and trim the tails close to the top of the ring. Then gently fold the tails back down into the deck wells, keeping it fluffed out as much as you can. Soak with some juice and you should be set to go.

You probably don't want to hear this, but I would really consider switching to the newer vertical or SSOCC vertical coils. To me, they are a drastic improvement over the older horizontal coils...I have yet to have a dry hit or even have one wear out on me...I just usually switch them out after 3 or 4 weeks of use, but they still function fine. You can get them cheap too...authentics at FT for under $8.99 a pack and they last a long time. I stopped fiddling with trying to rebuild the OCC coils...
