Hi all, somewhat new to rebulding and I'm having some troubles with burnt tasting hits on my subtank mini in rta mode.

Whenever I try to go over the 22-23 watt threshold I start getting burnt hits like crazy. Forgive me for no pictures of the build, but its a .88 ohm standard coil (same with a .77, .80 and .72 coil), i feel like my wicking is ok, at least i think so, still learning the art of wicking, but I was curious as to what may be causing the burnt hits.

When someone gets these burnt hits what is usually the culprit? I'm just unsure of what to try and address first.

If it's tasting burnt (assuming it's a fairly new coil & wick) your wicking can't keep up with how fast the eliquid is being vaporized. If it wicks properly at a lower wattage then you may need to build a larger diameter coil so you can have more wicking for the higher wattage.

One thing I did notice was that after taking about a 5-6 second vape (when above the 22-23 wtt threshold) I would still hear juice sizzling for about a second after I let off the buttun. Would this be due to not enough liquid to keep the coil cool?

^ This.

Try larger diameter coils so you can get more wick into the coil...may work or may not.

Why the need to increase the power? It's often not necessary to vape at high wattage/voltage. Learn your device's limits and vape accordingly.

for me the ST Mini functions flawlessly at 23w

I think what you notice is the same thing I do, at 25w and above the ST Mini's small juice inlets can't keep up. Great vape at 23w, but limited. I don't like my ST Minis any less for it, but it does have me looking forward to the release of the Lemo 2.

I have been able to go to 30watt with the OCC's though. But they do have the huge holes on the side so it makes sense. Thing is, I've watched vids online and see people doing 25 watts on the rta with zero issues...

It all depends on what juice, wicking material, coil build, battery sag, etc. etc. etc.

Just because "some people" crank to 25W doesn't mean it will work for you. Just because a device can deliver x Watts doesn't mean you have to drive the bus that hard. Like the guys above mention, find *YOUR* sweet spot. If you're burning at 28W, just back it down until it stops burning. Yes, I hear some latent sizzling when I release the fire button, but I am o.k. with that. I just don't like the taste of fried juice, so if I'm running too hot, I'll back it off. I don't care what NUMBER I'm running, I care about the quality of my vape....

Good Luck :)

ETA, I was having a hellish time with my kayfuns last summer. I finally wised up and built a bigger coil (I had been building 1/16" micro coils, wicking with cotton). Now that I have the bigger (3/32" and more often 1/8") coil, I only get a burnt hit once in a great while, instead of once every 3-4 hits.

I will definitely be building a larger diameter coil when I get home.

I do want to find whats right for me, but I also want to be able to experiment and go to higher watts to see if it IS for me. I have yet to go higher due to my issue. I see many people talking about running the subtank with high watts and high vg with no issues, so I have to assume I'm doing something wrong. Hopefully going with a larger diameter will fix my issue.

I'm thinking it's more about the temperature of the chamber. It's not the eliquid that makes the coil cooler but rather the amount of airflow you have for the wattage you're using. Tighter airflow lets less air in, therefore you have a hotter chamber.

Are you sure your button isn't sticking though? I would make sure that's not happening first.
