Now maybe everybody knows this tactic but just in case--ya know how your spool of wire likes to go kind of wild if you don't pin down the end after snipping off a piece? Just wrap a wide rubber band around the spool before you ever use it--or after if its already too late. Those blue rubber bands that come wrapped around celery and such are perfect. Pull off your wire, snip it, set your spool back on the shelf, every thing is cool. Try it.:)

You guys using the TEMCO reels? There's a little hole in the rim. Just unreel a couple turns for 1-3 coils and thread back through that hole.
That's what I do with my 27. My other spools are from Lightening Vapes and they just have the little cut in the rim. Drilling a small hole in them will do the trick. Now it's just trying to unwind and respool about 25 feet of Kanthal.

Another fellow fly fisherman here. This is what I use...... Bobbin holder.jpg
It easily hold a spool of Kanthal and when you're done wrapping coils you just bend the wire over a little at the end of the tube.

ETA... I'll post a pic of what it looks like with a spool of Kanthal when I get home.

...like this idea. Do you have a picture of the Kanthal spool on it? Also, where can you get one?

You can just get a blade and cut a slit in the reel and slide your wire end into that and bend it
This is the method I'm using right now. Cut little slices into the plastic close together all the way around the spool. Getting the cuts close together helps eliminate waste. Usually use needle nose wire-pliers to pull the wire out, and then pull it back into the grooves once it's cut to desired length.

Here's my solution...a little complex but it works well for me...YMMV

The problem... I didn't want the big 100 ft spools of kanthal taking up real estate in my vape case, but I wanted a supply of wire on hand.

My solution... My MIL is a seamstress so I asked her for a few spare bobbins... She offered up some metal ones. I jam a 1/4" dowel in the hole and chuck it into a cordless drill. Wrap a bit of kanthal around the bobbin and shoot the tag end out of one of the side holes. Keeping light tension on the kanthal coming off of the main spool, start running the drill. You will be able to cleanly transfer a bunch of wire onto the bobbin very neatly.

The metal spools have a bunch of holes on the sides...so after wrapping my coil, I snip off the bobbin and take then end of the wire and push it through one of these holes... Now my bobbin doesn't unravel when not using it. And I get to carry a lot of wire in a neat little package without taking up any space in my vape kit.

Hope it works for you...

Thanks
Geo
