Some (liquids, wires, atomizers? I haven't figured out the exact cause) will turn my wicks a rusty-red color after a few days of disuse. It doesn't seem to affect the taste, any, and the color clears right up after I run some fresh liquid through them. Rust is iron oxide. If you're using a wire material with iron content (Kanthal is FeCrAl, an alloy of Iron [Fe], Chromium [Cr], and Aluminum [Al]) I suppose it might be possible, but I've never experienced it, myself. I've got spools of Kanthal and SS that have been sitting for over two years with nothing on them but some dust.

It commonly happens when you let an RDA sit with juice in it. I just had to work on a few of mine in the very same condition, and I am using quality wire from Kbee, Lightning Vapes, and directly from Temco.

Remove the cotton, dry burn and rinse the coils, re-wick, and you're done.

Thanks all for the info! I did all that and still had rust color on coils! Just pulled coils and started over. Don't think it would be a good thing vaping rust-

Hey

So had this RDA I didn't use for a few weeks. Opened it up to check the coils and they looked like they had rust on them! Is this possible?

I bet you are using Kanthal and that you dry burn your coils right? Yes someone told me years ago that their coil had what looked like rust. I knew Kanthal has iron, but that is the deep inner layer. And I thought the outer layer just can't rust.

Well I used to work in microscopy. So I grabbed a microscope and looked at my own Kanthal coils. And I'll be darn. Microfractures everywhere, some deep enough to reach the center were the rust is coming from. I pretty much stopped dry burning coils from that day forward.

Well how many times did you dry burn them before rusting? Maybe once or twice isn't enough to be a big problem. I recall three or more times the coils would become brittle. Later I saw them under a microscope and no wonder they become brittle. Some cracks are more than halfway through. Otherwise you could always space your coils. That's what I do.
