My concern is safety in a an unprotected mech mod. Is this one actually an IMR?
That is above my pay grade.
What I think I know: INR/IMR are about the same and are preferred over ICR type cells. PCB protection chips are no longer common on batteries used for vaping.

I just buy what Mr. Mooch recommends.

If you want to play it absolutely safe, there is no way around LiFePO cells, because those won't suffer from thermal runaway. Downside is their lower voltage of only 3.2V, overall lower capacity and the need for a special charger.

If you want a "standard" 3.6V LiIon cell, any modern 18650 of the "Big 5" LG, Molicel, Samsung, Sanyo/Panasonic and Sony/Murata will provide enough safety.
Just make sure to use a cell with an appropriate CDR. 10A is more than enough for your purposes, but if you want even more safety, simply choose a cell with a higher CDR.

Btw, in reality "IMR" doesn't mean anything. Cells with that prefix aren't necessarily more safe than NMC or INR for example. Stay away from ICR though, because those are considered to be outdated.

All in all it's way more important to keep your equipment in immaculate shape, than searching for a special chemistry.

Just ordered a pair of Molicel P26A to try. Thanks.
(I know I must sound paranoid).
